BETHANY, Okla. - Southern Nazarene opened its conference series in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon, using a strong offensive performance and a late rally to defeat Ouachita Baptist 9-7 at home.
The Crimson Storm pounded out 14 hits and responded immediately after surrendering the lead in the fifth inning to secure the series-opening victory.
After a scoreless first inning, SNU struck first in the bottom of the second. A single from Presley Brott and a sacrifice bunt by Bailey Nettles set the table for Ella Sottile, who drove a triple to right field to plate the game's first run. Macy Stewart followed with a sacrifice fly before Kristen Mullendore and Eden Anderson delivered back-to-back hits, giving the Storm a 3-0 advantage.
Ouachita answered with a run in the third, but SNU extended its lead again in the fourth. Mullendore and Anderson opened the inning with singles before Quinlyn Johnson loaded the bases. Kira Taber then came through with the biggest swing of the inning, lining a double to right field that cleared the bases and pushed the Storm in front 6-1.
The Tigers mounted a major rally in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of home runs and a defensive miscue to score six runs and take a 7-6 lead.
Southern Nazarene wasted little time responding. In the bottom half of the inning, Sottile doubled to start the frame before Stewart reached base and Mullendore advanced on an error that allowed the tying run to score. Anderson then delivered the decisive hit of the game, drilling a two-run double to right field to put the Storm back on top 9-7.
In the circle, Baylee Sales started for SNU before Olivia Hernandez entered in relief and earned the win after working 1.2 innings. Ashley Larson closed the door in the seventh to pick up the save and secure the victory.
Offensively, Anderson led the way with three hits and three RBIs while Johnson and Mullendore each collected three hits of their own. Sottile added two extra-base hits and scored twice in the win.Â
