Southern Nazarene Picks Up Win Over the Rangers

The Crimson Storm were nearly unstoppable as they took down NWOSU, 60-37

BETHANY, Okla. – Southern Nazarene used a dominant day on the ground to roll past Northwestern Oklahoma State, 60-37 Saturday to earn their second Great American Conference win this season.

The Crimson Storm (2-5, 2-5 GAC)  struck early after Jaylen Chelf broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run on SNU's opening drive for a 7-0 lead. The defense quickly added to the advantage when Noah Cockerham returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown giving SNU a 14-0 lead with 9:18 left in the first quarter.

Northwestern (0-8, 0-8 GAC) cut the deficit to 14-8 on a 15-yard touchdown run by Jacob T. Jones and a two-point conversion, but SNU answered right back. Maddox Olatunde capped a 5-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to make it 21-8.

SNU controlled much of the second quarter and extended its lead on a 35-yard field goal by Brett Leonardt and a 29-yard touchdown run by Olatunde that pushed the margin to 31-8. The Rangers closed the half on a 5-yard touchdown run to make it 31-15 at the break.

The Storm pulled away in the third quarter. A safety at the 13:15 mark made it 33-15, and two plays later Olatunde connected with Karomo Collins on a 16-yard touchdown pass following a 5-play, 59-yard drive. Kaden Manuel added a 32-yard touchdown run late in the quarter to cap a 7-play, 90-yard drive and make it 47-15.

Northwestern showed life in the fourth quarter. Jayce Morgan hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jones to cut it to 47-22, but Julien Simpson answered with a 17-yard touchdown run to restore the 32-point lead.

Jones added two more touchdown passes for the Rangers, but Cameron Anderson's 8-yard touchdown run with 2:37 remaining kept SNU comfortably in front.

The Crimson Storm scored over 50 points for the first time in the program's Division II era. Olatunde led the way, finishing with 295 rushing yards on 18 carries to move into second all-time in program history for single-game rushing yards. He averaged 16.4 yards per carry with two rushing touchdowns and added a passing touchdown, leading an SNU rushing attack that totaled 540 yards and six touchdowns at 10.4 yards per carry.
