Crimson Storm Rally to Take Down Arkansas Tech

Volleyball responds to pick up home win over the Golden Suns in five-set battle

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene battled back to take down Arkansas Tech in five sets Thursday night at the Sawyer Center, outlasting the Golden Suns in a back-and-forth conference thriller.

The Crimson Storm (11-7, 3-3 GAC) took the opening two sets and held on late to beat Arkansas Tech (10-8, 4-2 GAC) in front of their home crowd.

Southern Nazarene grabbed early momentum in the first set cruising to a 22-11 lead quickly. SNU kept their foot on the gas using a 12-kill effort on .303 hitting to take a 25-17 win despite 13 kills from Arkansas Tech on .243 hitting.

The Crimson Storm kept control in the second set racing  to a 20-16 lead, but Arkansas Tech was not going down without a fight. The Golden Suns went on a 6-1 run to take over the lead. SNU responded by rattling off the final four points they needed to take the set 25-22. SNU reeled off 12 kills on 34 swings for a .235 clip to go up 2-0.

The third set belonged to the Golden Suns. Arkansas Tech took the lead from the jump and never looked back. They posted 16 kills to create separation, while SNU hit just .058 with 10 kills, as ATU held off a late SNU push for a 25-22 win.

Arkansas Tech kept it rolling in the fourth. The Golden Suns put down 15 kills on .387 hitting with just three errors to roll to a 25-12 win and force a fifth, while the Crimson Storm hit -.088 in the frame.

In the final set, Southern Nazarene closed it out behind an efficient finish. The Storm went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-8 lead. The Golden Suns responded with a run of their own to tie the score up at 11 all. Riley Richardson and Kate Wright teamed up for a pair of kills and a few ATU errors gave Southern Nazarene the advantage. SNU hit .357 with 11 kills and just one error to edge Arkansas Tech 15-13 and take the 3-2 victory.

Southern Nazarene finished hitting just .155 with 51 kills, 12 aces and 11 blocks, compared to .229 with 67 kills for Arkansas Tech. The Golden Suns held the edge in points, kills, assists and digs, while SNU led in aces 12-5.

Kate Wright led SNU with 16 kills, while Riley Richardson added 11 kills and a team-high 5 blocks and Makenzie Moseley chipped in 8 kills and 5 blocks.

Emma Grace Moddelmog directed the offense with 31 assists and 11 digs, Sydney Marquez led the back row with 18 digs and a team-high 5 aces, and Rayanna Mauldin added 14 digs and 2 aces. Hannah Morgan added 5 blocks and 2 aces.
