Back and Forth Battle Goes in Favor of Ouachita Baptist

Southern Nazarene falls in four sets to the Tigers, 3-1

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene started strong at home Thursday night at the Sawyer Center, but Ouachita Baptist used three straight set wins to hold off the Crimson Storm.

Southern Nazarene (14-10, 6-4 GAC) grabbed early momentum in the first set using an 6-0 run to take a 18-11 lead. SNU cruised from there using a 17-kill effort on .375 hitting to take a 25-17 win while holding Ouachita (12-10, 8-2 GAC) to just 8 kills on .000 hitting.

Ouachita Baptist answered in a marathon second set. The Tigers slowly chipped away at the Crimson Storm lead tying the score at 24 all after an 8-2 run. SNU had four set points, but Ouachita rattled off back to back kills and took advantage of a Storm attack error to edge SNU 31-29 to even the match at 1-1.

The third set belonged to Ouachita. The two squads traded points, but a five point serving run from Hannah Morgan pushed SNU ahead, 16-10. The Tigers responded taking the lead over at 23-20 and finished things off posting 13 kills on .265 hitting to pull away late and take a 25-22 win.

Ouachita kept it rolling in the fourth set. The Tigers hit a match-high .452 with 20 kills and just one error to close out the set 25-20 and take the 3-1 victory, despite 13 kills from SNU on .256 hitting.

Southern Nazarene finished hitting .253 with 61 kills and 10 aces, compared to .241 with 60 kills for Ouachita Baptist. Kate Wright led SNU with 21 kills and 21 digs, while Maecie Hawthorne tied her career high with 11 kills and added a block.

Emma Grace Moddelmog directed the offense, matching her career high with 53 assists to go alongside 3 aces and 10 digs for a double-double. Sydney Marquez led the back row with 24 digs and 3 assists, and Morgan added a team-high 4 aces.
