Crimson Storm Split Final Day of Branson Leadoff Classic

Storm picks up run-rule victory over Newman, but fall short in extra innings to Missouri Southern ]

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRANSON, Mo. - The Crimson Storm met Newman and Missouri Southern in their final games of the Branson Leadoff Classic. Southern Nazarene cruised past the Jets in game one but fell short to the Lions in eleven innings.

Game 1
The Crimson Storm got on the board first after Liana Heshiki drove in a run on a ground ball to the pitcher. The Jets then shut down the SNU offense to send them to the plate.

Katelyn Woodard started in the circle for the Storm, giving up just one hit in the first, holding NU scoreless. The Crimson Storm added to their lead in the second inning after a Jets error plated Kristen Mullendore giving SNU a 2-0 lead.

The offense exploded for a five-run third inning, which began after a Mullendore single scored Noa Dodson. Eden Anderson, Peyton Norvelle, and Emma Green all followed with doubles, respectively, extending the SNU lead to 7-0.

Woodard continued to keep the Jets off balance in the box handing them another scoreless frame in the third. The Crimson Storm finished off Newman in the fourth inning after an NU error plated one and a two-run shot from Anderson plated two.

Jentry Henderson finished things off in the circle as SNU claimed the 10-0 run-rule victory over Newman.

Game 2
The Lions wasted no time getting their bats going as they plated three in the first. The Crimson Storm was able to respond by plating one off of a sac fly from Mullendore.

Olivia Hernandez returned to the circle for more work, but Missouri Southern continued to tack on the runs in the top of the third as they plated two more forcing a pitching change for SNU. Woodard came on recording the final out of the frame.

SNU was able to answer in the bottom of the third with a double from Kelsi Hilton and an Anderson single to cut the Lions' lead to one. Missouri Southern stretched their lead once more with a three-run homer over the center field wall pushed their lead to 8-5.

The Storm was not done yet as a single from Emma Swearingen plated Green in the bottom of the fourth. The SNU offense continued to string hits together as they tied the score up in the fifth after a triple from Green and a Hailey Evans homerun.

The two squads struggled to break the tie, forcing extra innings of play. MSSU broke the tie first in the top of the eighth after an RBI single extended their lead to 9-8. The SNU offense continued to respond as well as they tied the score once more on a wild pitch.

The Lions went on to score in the ninth, but the Crimson Storm once again was resilient. Missouri Southern put up a three spot in the top of tenth forcing the Southern Nazarene offense to respond again. The Storm did just that as Liana Heshiki blasted a three-run bomb to tie the score at 13-13 going into the eleventh.

MSSU tacked on another run on a single to left, but the Storm held them there. With one last chance to keep the game alive, the Lions' defense denied any chance of a twelfth inning as they handed SNU their first loss on the season, 14-13.
