SNU drops matchup to No. 6 Texas Woman’s in Denton

Crimson Storm struggle to keep pace in Denton, dropping their first game of 2025 in a 78-44 loss

DENTON, Texas - Southern Nazarene opened their 2025 season on the road Wednesday evening, but the Crimson Storm couldn't keep up with No. 6 Texas Woman's University, falling 78-44 in Denton.

SNU (0-1, 0-0 GAC) came out with energy early. After a TWU (4-1, 0-0 LSC) turnover, Boston Berry jumped in the passing lane for a steal, setting up Shannon Burton for a smooth jumper to get the Storm on the board. Moments later, Berry found Burton again in the paint for another bucket. Hannah Duncan secured a defensive rebound and pushed it ahead, leading to a clean jumper from Jillian Crawford. Crawford stayed hot, knocking down a three off a pass from Lexi Mackey. But despite SNU knocking down a few early shots, TWU quickly took control. The Pioneers responded with a strong run, speeding up the pace, forcing turnovers, and turning those into transition points that pushed them out in front. TWU closed the quarter strong, and the Crimson Storm trailed 22-9 after the first.

In the second quarter, Hannah Duncan got things going with a strong layup inside off a feed from Halyn Browning. Burton added another bucket in the paint minutes later. Browning grabbed a board on the other end, and SNU capitalized again as Berry buried a three. Mackey followed with a jumper in the paint, and Browning knocked down a three of her own. Berry added another deep ball before halftime, but Texas Woman's continued to control the pace, answering nearly every SNU bucket while stretching the lead with another scoring burst. TWU maintained control, sending SNU into the locker room down 44-24.

The third quarter saw SNU try to chip away. Mackey knocked down a free throw, and Crawford drilled a fastbreak three off a pass from Jena Bay. Berry got loose in transition for a layup soon after, but TWU opened the half on yet another run, extending the margin past 30 before SNU could settle back in. The Pioneers kept the lead firmly in their hands, taking a 63-33 advantage into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Berry opened with another three, and Bay added a free throw in transition. Crawford scored once more in the paint off a feed from Mackey, and Carley Gasaway knocked down a pair of free throws late. Even with some late scoring, the early Pioneer runs proved too much to overcome, and the Crimson Storm couldn't climb back, falling 78-44 in Denton to start the season
