MONKEY ISLAND, Okla.—In their final tournament action ahead of the Great American Conference Championships, the Southern Nazarene University Men's Golf team claimed a 14th place finish at the Showdown at Shangri-La on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.
Southern Nazarene climbed two spots in the 18 team field from round one to round three. Teams faced colder weather on Tuesday morning, leading to higher scores. SNU shot 303 in round one, 293 in round two, but their team score shot up to 321 in their final round. UCO stayed consistent in their three rounds, shooting 281-283-285, to edge Harding by one stroke for the team title. UCO's own Bennett Baldwin shot a remarkable 11-under for the tournament to claim the individual title.
Sam Schmidt paced the Crimson Storm with a T-48 finish. He was one of two Crimson Storm players with two eagles in the tournament. SNU finished with five total eagles over their three rounds, tops in the tournament. Schmidt shot 73 in each of his first two rounds and followed that up with a 79 in round three, giving him a 54 hole total score of 225.
Dawson Dunlap followed Schmidt by finishing T-69 after shooting 230 for the tournament. He notched one of SNU's five eagles in the tournament and went 70-73-87 during his three rounds.
Landon Hendrix finished in solo 75th, while Mason Sebrant was just one stroke behind to finish T-76. Hendrix shot consistently all tournament with scores of 78, 77, and 78 to finish at 233. Sebrant shot 82-75-77 for a three round total of 234. He collected SNU's two other eagles in the tournament.
Jace Black rounded out the SNU lineup with a solo 92nd finish. He totaled 250 over three rounds, shooting 86, 72, 92 for the tournament.
SNU will have three weeks off before competing in the Great American Conference Championships April 21-23. The GAC Championships will take place at the Club at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow. The Crimson Storm finished 7th at the GAC Championship tournament last year.
