Storm Collect Series Win Over Newman

SNU Baseball embarks on their best start in the Division II era

BETHANY, Okla. - The Crimson Storm returned to Feland Field to begin their 2024 season. SNU hosted the Newman Jets, taking the series to begin the year on a high note. The 3-1 start marks the best start for Southern Nazarene since joining Division II.

Game 1

The Crimson Storm opened up their 2024 season with a bang. Patrick Hine got the opening day start for SNU warding off the Jets to begin the contest. The newcomer duo of Max Dias and Jacob Martinez put the Storm on the board first, putting Newman in a 3-0 hole after the first inning of play. The Jets plated two in the second and one in the third to tie the score 3-3. Newman then doubled to pull ahead 4-3 before Hine got the final out of the inning. Colby Entwistle's homer then tied the score at 4-all at the end of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles from Tucker LeMay and Dax Edmonds pushed SNU ahead 6-4 heading into the top of sixth. A few Newman hits and an SNU error allowed the Jets to tie the score once more at 6-6. The Storm took back control plating three in the bottom of the eighth. The Jets would add one more run, but it was not enough as the Storm snagged the 9-7 opening-day win.

Game 2

Southern Nazarene picked up right where they left off in game two of their Thursday doubleheader. Oliver Wilson took the mound this time for the Storm going three up and three down to begin the contest. A lead-off bomb from O'Shea Whiteside put the Storm on the board first once again. Edmonds then doubled to plate one more to give SNU a 2-0 lead after the first. Newman responded with a two-run home run to tie the score two all. Southern Nazarene exploded for a six-run inning in the second to pull ahead 8-2. Whiteside mashed his second home run of the day to push the Storm lead 10-2 after three. The Jets responded with a three-run inning cutting their deficit to five. Blake Brinkmeyer plated two more for SNU before the Jets tacked on four to cut the Storm lead 12-10. Martinez and Alex Leon plated two more to give SNU some insurance runs going into the top of the ninth. Newman would only get one more run across before Landon Kinder shut the door giving the Storm the double header sweep, 11-14.

Game 3

The Storm opened up their second day of play with the Jets as Will DesHotels made his debut on the mound in the SNU uniform. The Crimson Storm offense picked up right where they left off the day before as Alex Leon singled to center to plate Entwistle to give SNU an early 1-0 lead. The Jets responded with two runs to take the lead 2-1. Southern Nazarene plated two thanks to a Dias double to gain back the lead 4-3 after four. The Newman bats continued to have a response for every SNU run. The Jets blasted a two-run bomb to go ahead once again. An SNU wild pitch would plate one more Jet to end the top of the fifth. Southern Nazarene would plate just one after loading the bases. A walk from Leon sent Dias across home to cut the Newman lead 6-4. The Jets tacked on one final run before shutting down the Storm in the final inning handing the Storm their first loss of the season 7-4.

Game 4

Pitching was the name of the game for the Storm in game four of the series as Martinez took the mound for SNU. He then got Southern Nazarene going offensively drilling one down the right-field line for a stand-up triple. Entwistle would then reach base on an error that would send Martinez home to give the Crimson Storm the early 1-0 lead in the second. The bats then came to life for Newman as they plated just one in the third thanks to a run down. SNU responded by bringing three runners across thanks to singles from Whiteside, Edmonds, and Martinez. A single in the fifth would tack on one more for Newman and be the end of the outing for Martinez. He allowed one earned run in just five innings of work. Zack Robinson took over on the mound and shut down the Jets for the final two innings to give SNU the 4-2 victory and the series win.

Next Up

The Crimson Storm will travel to Tahlequah for a three-game series with Northeastern State on February 9 and 10. The Storm is set to play a single game Friday the 10th and a double header Saturday the 9th against the Riverhawks.
