Coleman Comes In Clutch

Tyrell Colemann seals the win for the Storm with the go-ahead bucket and the last-possession steal over UAM

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene Men's Basketball earned an epic victory over Arkansas-Monticello Thursday evening, edging the Weevils in the final minute and a half, thanks to two clutch jumpers from graduate student Tyrell Coleman

Both the Storm (12-12, 9-10 GAC) and the Weevils (11-13,9-10 GAC) came into the contest with the same overall record while UAM was ahead in the GAC by just a single conference win over the Storm. SNU was behind for a lot of the contest until an offensive eruption from Tyrell Coleman gave the Storm the go-ahead bucket with 15 seconds remaining in the game.

The duo of Cam Slaymaker and Ben-Baker McCann gave the Storm the 10-4 lead six minutes into the game. UAM rattled off the deficit in the next few minutes, tying the game at 12-all. The SNU bench came in and contributed some key points to get ahead, seeing buckets from Kent Girard and Coleman halfway through the first half.

Throughout the last seven minutes, one another's lead did not exceed three points as UAM had the 18-15 advantage right at the seven-minute mark. A three pointer from Benno Zecic tied the score once more, but the Weevils continued to find an upper hand. They buried a three of their own to lead by two with just under three minuted left, but Baker-McCann sunk a free throw and Coleman threw down a dunk to take the 21-20 lead.

The teams went back and forth, but UAM managed to sneak by with the 26-23 lead at halftime.

The Weevils kept the pace and outscored the Storm 13-7 within the first five minutes of the second half, gaining a 39-30 lead. Keeshawn Mason and Coleman teamed up for nine quick points to put SNU within two. UAM found more ways to intensify their offense, but the Storm had an answer on their end of the floor with a few made free throws and buckets from Zecic. Mason and Shawn Barthelemy also chipped in a few points to bring the Storm within two points once more with just under five minutes remaining in the ballgame.

The two squads traded buckets in the next few possessions with UAM still ahead, but Coleman took matters into his own hands, sinking back-to-back jumpers to put SNU ahead by one with 15 seconds left in the game. After a Storm timeout, the Weevils had an opportunity to take the lead, they were unsuccessful on the shot attempt and settled for a foul that sent Barthelemy back to the line with a single second remaining.

Barthelemy buried both from the charity stripe, giving his team some insurance points as the Storm were ahead now by three points. Coleman  came up clutch once more in the Weevils' last possession of the contest, erasing their chance at a last second shot attempt as he grabbed a steal to earn SNU the 57-54 final victory over Arkansas-Monticello.

Coleman nearly had a double-double with 13 points and nine boards, also tallying three steals and blocks a piece. Zecic lead in scoring again with 14 points and five boards.
