HOUSTON, Texas—The Southern Nazarene University Men's Golf team returned to tournament action after a four month hiatus between the fall and spring seasons as they hosted the Houston Classic at the Golf Club of Houston, where they finished 13th in the field.
This marked the fifth consecutive year that SNU has hosted the Houston Classic. The team struggled a bit out of the gate on day one, but bounced back to improve in rounds two and three. The Crimson Storm found themselves 15th after shooting 327 in round one, but responded with respectable showings of 318 and 311 in rounds two and three, allowing them to climb two spots on the leaderboard and finish with a three round team total of 956. They edged Washburn by 7 strokes and finished 13 strokes behind Cameron for the 12th place spot.
Midwestern State won the tournament with a three round score of 883. Their own Seth Bearden won the individual title at 4-under, thanks to a phenomenal 3-under final round.
The Crimson Storm were led from the four-bag slot as Mason Sebrant consistently went 76-78-77 for a three-round score of 231, good for a T35 finish.
Sam Schmidt finished five strokes behind Sebrant with a total score of 236. He improved each round, going 82 in round one before improving to an 80 in round two and solid 74 in round three. He finished T49 in the field.
Landon Hendrix and Dawson Dunlap rounded out the scoring for SNU. Hendrix finished T69 after shooting 86-77-80, while Dunlap was one stroke behind with rounds of 83-82-80, leading to a T71 finish.
Jaxson Northcutt competed as an individual and put together a solid tournament. He finished T57 after dramatically improving from round one to rounds two and three. He improved from an 86 to a 77 from round 1 to round 2, and then cut two more strokes off for a 75 in round three.
SNU will return to tournament action in one month as they compete in the Oak Tree Invitational March 18-19 at the Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond. SNU finished 13th in that tournament one year ago.
