The Storm Take Down Newman in Season Opener

A strong Storm offense fends off the Jets to win season opener, 3-0

WICHITA, Kansas - The Southern Nazarene University Women's Soccer team opened up their 2023 season on the plains, in Wichita, Kansas on the campus of Newman University. The Crimson Storm came out on top in a dominating matchup defeating Newman in shutout fashion, 3-0.

The Newman Jets (0-0, 0-0 MIAA) came out shooting early, but the Storm (0-0, 0-0 GAC) were not far behind them. The Storm and the Jets held their own offensively, both teams tallying 6 shots while the Jets had 2 shots on goal in the first half.

The Storm struck first with a first-half goal by freshman Bella Morgas assisted by fellow freshman Brenda Castro to go ahead 1-0. This marked Morgas' first career goal in the Crimson Storm uniform. The Goalkeeper for the Storm, Gianna Bonnett, had two saves early in the first half to keep the Jets off the scoreboard.

The Storm came out strong in the second half out shooting the Jets 7-2. Morgas scored her second goal of the game assisted by junior Karla Ramirez to add on to the Storm's lead. Ramirez later decided to take one for herself, stretching the lead to 3-0. This would be all the Storm offense needed to pull away with a 3-0 win over the Jets.
