BETHANY, Okla.—Two runs and two hits was all Southeastern Oklahoma State needed to take a 2-1 win over Southern Nazarene in game one of the series.
The Southern Nazarene (19-20, 9-12 GAC) pitching staff did an excellent job all game as Southeastern (22-17, 16-5 GAC) managed just two hits. Unfortunately for the Crimson Storm, both of those hits resulted in runs as the first came via the solo home run in the first inning, and the second was an RBI single up the middle.
SNU managed five hits in the game, but could never string any together as they got one hit in every inning between the second and sixth innings. They tied the game at 1 in the fifth inning thanks to a lead-off single from Kennedy Sherer, followed by three Southeastern wild pitches that allowed Sherer to make it all the way around the bases.
The following inning, the Savage Storm regained the lead after a leadoff walk resulted in a run. The walk was followed by a sacrifice bunt and Southeastern's second hit of the game, a slow roller back up the middle.
Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning, giving Southeastern the series opening win.
Olivia Hernandez pitched an excellent game in the circle. She went 5.1 innings, striking out six Southeastern hitters. Janie Worthington came on in relief and pitched the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.
Emma Swearingen led SNU offensively with a pair of hits. Sydney Sundbye reached base on all three plate appearances with a hit and two walks.
SNU will hope to bounce back offensively in tomorrow's double-header which is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Tere Webber Field.
