Bats Come Alive

Four home runs propel SNU to game one win at SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla.—The bats came alive for Southern Nazarene on Friday afternoon as seven extra-base hits, including four home runs, propelled the Crimson Storm to an 8-4 victory in game one of the series at Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Southern Nazarene (18-18, 7-10 GAC) was limited to just three runs in their midweek double-header at No. 4 Central Oklahoma, but the offense exploded in the middle innings on Friday as they tallied all eight runs between the third through the fifth innings.

Southwestern (6-28, 3-15 GAC) struck first in the opening frame after leading off the bottom half of the first inning with a double followed by a single. Southern Nazarene came back to tie the game in the third inning when Brooklyn Sullivan connected on her second home run of the season after an incredible 10 pitch at-bat.

The Bulldogs regained the lead in the bottom of the third as they used three hits to grab a 3-1 advantage. SNU once again responded, though, in the top of the fourth when McKayla Franks led off the inning with a single and was promptly brought home by Natalie Jones' fourth home run of the season, tying the game at three.

The Crimson Storm really broke the game open in the fifth inning when they tallied four extra-base hits, including back-to-back home runs from Hailey Evans and McKayla Franks. SNU then added two more runs in the inning off of a Hannah Morales two-RBI double.

Leading 8-3, SNU then cruised through the final three innings to secure the 8-4 win over Southwestern in game one of the series.

Emma Swearingen and Kennedy Sherer each led the way with three hits for SNU in the game.

Olivia Hernandez picked up her sixth win of the season out of the bullpen. She struck out an incredible eight batters over four innings and allowed just one run.

After sweeping SWOSU last season, Southern Nazarene has now won four straight games over the Bulldogs. The Crimson Storm will look to make it six straight with another sweep in tomorrow's double-header. First pitch of the double-header is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in Weatherford.
