Storm Drop in Series Opener

SNU falls in series opener after big fifth inning from Monticello

BETHANY, Okla.—A big fifth inning from Arkansas-Monticello paved the way for the Blossoms to come away with a 7-4 win over Southern Nazarene to open the three-game set.

The Crimson Storm (16-15, 5-9 GAC) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but Monticello (15-13, 7-8 GAC) rattled off seven unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings on their way to the win.

SNU's three-run third came after Kennedy Sherer led off the inning with a single. She advanced to second base after an errant pickoff attempt from the catcher went sailing into right field. Two batters later, Sherer scored on Sydney Sundbye's RBI single up the middle. Hailely Evans followed Sundbye's single with a moonshot to left field that smashed into the top of the scoreboard for GAC leading eighth home run of the season.

SNU was shut down in order in both the fourth and fifth innings as they watched the Blossoms jump in front with a five-run fifth inning. SNU starter Janie Worthington rolled through the first four innings of the game, but the Crimson Storm struggled to get off the field in the fifth inning as UAM continued to keep the line moving. They sent 11 batters to plate, including a string of eight straight without recording an out. A bases loaded flyout and strikeout finally brought an end to the inning with Monticello leading 5-3.

Two more hits in the sixth inning led to two more runs for the Blossoms as they expanded their advantage to 7-3. Three straight hits from SNU to start the bottom of the sixth inning allowed them to get one run back, but the big inning was quickly thwarted as a strikeout, flyout, and groundout kept the Storm in check. They would go down 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.

Hailey Evans notched two hits, including the monster two-run shot in the third inning. Liana Heshiki continued her hot stretch at the plate with a pair of doubles.

The Crimson Storm will look to get back on track tomorrow and take the series if they can earn a double-header sweep over the Blossoms. First pitch of the double-header is set for 12:00 p.m. at Tere Webber Field.
