Dominant Double-Header

SNU earns series win over Newman with a resounding sweep on Wednesday's double-header

BETHANY, Okla.—After splitting yesterday's double-header, Southern Nazarene came away with a series win by taking both games of Wednesday's double-header over Newman. The Crimson Storm (15-12) took game one 8-1, before rattling off a dominant 14-2 run-rule victory over Newman (7-17) in game two.

Game 1:

The Crimson Storm offense broke out in a big way early in game one. They scored seven runs in the first two innings and cruised to an 8-1 win.

SNU came out of the gates swinging with three runs in the first inning. Liana Heshiki scored the game's first run on Emma Swearingen's sacrifice fly. Three batters later, McKayla Franks doubled home both Hailey Evans and Natalie Jones to push the lead to 3-0.

The following inning, Southern Nazarene scored four runs on five hits as the kept the line moving by batting around and sending nine batters to the plate.

Leading 7-0, the Crimson Storm cruised through the rest of the game. Newman scored one run in the top of the fourth, but SNU got that run back when Hailey Evans blasted her first home run of the day. She added another home run in game two and has now hit seven homers for the season.

Jayleigh Totten picked up her first complete game in the circle. She struck out 3 batters and allowed just 3 hits in all seven innings of work.

Natalie Jones and Hailey Evans each notched two hits, including an extra base hit. Evans hit the home run in the fifth inning, while Jones roped an RBI double in the big second inning.

Game 2:

There was no stopping Southern Nazarene's offense in game two. They piled on 14 runs in just five innings of work as they picked up the run-rule victory to seal a series win over Newman.

The Storm looked to be in a good spot to once again score in the first inning after each of the first two batters reached base, but a double-play, followed by a flyout ended that threat.

Despite not scoring in the first inning, the offense kept coming. Liana Heshiki doubled home Kennedy Sherer and McKayla Franks in the second inning to get the scoring started, but it was the third inning where the SNU offense really exploded.

The Storm scored 12 times on just 6 hits in the third inning. They used plenty of patience at the plate and continually put the ball in play, forcing Newman into 3 errors in the inning. They batted around twice, sending 18 batters to the plate. SNU was walked 5 times in the inning and hit by two pitches.

Leading 14-0, SNU easily cruised to a 14-2 win. The Jets scored twice in the fifth inning, but never threatened to avoid the eight-run rule.

Liana Heshiki was 2-for-2 with a double and 4 RBIs in the game. Hailey Evans launched her second home run of the day, while Sydney Sundbye finished 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Maddie Southerland earned her fourth win of the season, pitching four innings without allowing a run.
