BETHANY, Okla. — After splitting the doubleheader with Arkansas Tech Saturday afternoon, Southern Nazarene fell short in Game 3 with a final score of 17-9.
The bats were quiet through the first few innings as neither team saw a run. SNU was the first to break out the scoring in the third inning, starting with a Cole Embrey double that sent O'Shea Whiteside and Tyler Broyles home for the 2-0 lead. SNU extended their lead to 3-0 when DJ Van Atten singled to right field to plate Cole Embrey.
The Wonder Boys caught up in the fourth with two home runs to trail 3-2. SNU put out their fire with a few snags in the field, but ATU reignited in the fifth inning, firing another home run to left field, tying the game at 3-3.
SNU quickly went to work in the fifth inning, starting with DJ Van Atten scoring off an ATU fielding error, reclaiming the lead at 4-3. SNU's lead ballooned to 8-3 when Oliver Wilson hit a bomb to left center with the bases loaded.
The Wonder Boys returned the favor in the sixth inning, tacking on two more runs from a two-RBI double. The seventh inning was also generous to Arkansas Tech as they earned the lead with a double and a home run to bump the score to 9-8. The Wonder Boys didn't stop, exploding for five more runs to extend their lead to 14-8 moving into the eighth inning.
The wind ramped up for the remainder of the game, making way for more home runs. ATU's last three runs were all long balls over the fence, pushing their lead to 17-8. In the Storm's last chance at a comeback, Van Atten cracked one way beyond the fence, giving SNU one more run before their third and final out, falling to the Wonder Boys 17-9.
Wilson highlighted the day with four RBIs from his grand slam. Van Atten finished 2-3 with two RBIs while Embrey finished 1-5 with two RBIs.
SNU will be back on the diamond Tuesday, February 28th in Woodward, Oklahoma as they face Oklahoma Panhandle State for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
