Storm Comeback Falls Short

SNU rallies in middle innings, but fall to Missouri Southern

BETHANY, Okla.—Southern Nazarene put up a valiant effort after falling behind 5-0 to Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon, but their comeback efforts fell short as the Lions went on to win the game 8-5 over the Crimson Storm, and put an end to SNU's four-game winning streak.

Missouri Southern (8-5) started quickly with two runs in the first inning, and three runs in the second inning, to jump in front 5-0. Their offense quieted in the next couple of innings, but one more run in the fifth, and a two-run home run in the seventh inning, became too much for Southern Nazarene (6-5) to overcome.

SNU's offense was shut down for the first three innings of the game as they mustered just two base runners, but the offense opened up in the fourth inning. The Storm got on the board after back-to-back doubles from McKayla Franks and Sydney Sundbye. They added another run two batters later when Taryn Martin also doubled, scoring Sundbye.

Missouri Southern pushed the lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning, but SNU was not done on the offensive end. They used a two-run home run from Natalie Jones and a solo home run from Liana Heshiki to claw back to within just one run. With two outs in the inning, Sundbye roped her second double of the game, putting the tying run in scoring position, but a routine pop-up stranded her at second.

The Lions' Leighton Withers blasted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, giving Missouri Southern a little breathing room. SNU was unable to overcome the three-run deficit in the bottom half of the inning, ultimately falling 8-5 to the Lions.

Franks and Sundbye each picked up two hits in the game.

Katelyn Woodard worked 5.1 innings in relief, allowing just two earned runs and striking out 4 batters.

SNU will be back tomorrow afternoon for two more games to close out the Raising Canes Softball Festival. It will be a tough test in game one as the Crimson Storm go up reigning National Champion and current nationally ranked No. 1 Rogers State. SNU will follow that game with a meeting with Northeastern State. The game with Rogers State is slated for 12:30 p.m.
