SNU Splits with the Marauders

Storm split home doubleheader with the University of Mary for Valentine’s Day special

BETHANY, Okla. — For their second home series of the season, Southern Nazarene split the doubleheader with the University of Mary, falling in the first game 26-14, but winning the second 26-10.

Game 1

The Marauders caused some trouble for SNU in the second inning, starting with a solo homer that kick started their offensive momentum. UM then put up a double and three RBI-homer to take an early 5-0 lead over the Storm.

SNU matched their pace in the bottom half of the inning, powered by a Sebastian Figga double that plated Drake Irby and Jonathan Crist, putting the Storm behind 5-2.

The windy conditions continued to favor the Marauders, who put up another homer to start the third inning. UM cracked another for two more RBI's, growing their lead to 8-2.

A Colby Entwistle single was able to stop the bleeding as he sent in Dax Edmonds home for the 8-3 trail. A wild pitch put more runs on SNU's side of the scoreboard as Christ, Entwistle, and DJ Van Atten were sent home to put SNU behind 8-4. The offense continued to ignite for the home squad as a Drake Irby double and Cole Embrey single combined for four RBIs, tying the ballgame at 8-8 at the end of the third.

Wind continued to be on the Marauders' side as they exploded in the fourth, putting up four home runs and a total of 14 trips across the plate to extend their lead to 22-8 just before their third out.

Through the the next three innings, UM slowed down a bit, only putting up four runs to SNU's five. Those five were not enough to overcome the early heat from the Marauders and SNU fell in Game 1, 26-14.

Game 2

The Marauders opened Game 2 with a two RBI homer in the second inning followed by two RBIs off a wild pitch and a ground out, putting them up 4-0 over SNU. SNU quickly took the lead in the same inning after a walk, a sacrifice fly, and a Dax Edmonds double earned the Storm the 5-4 advantage.

Five hits later, the Storm exploded for eight more runs, ending the second inning up 13-4 over the Marauders.

University of Mary was able to get one run in the third, but were quickly stumped by three more SNU runs, brought on by a walk, a wild pitch, and a Cole Embrey single that sent Irby home, which put the Storm ahead 16-5.

A homer and a double in the fourth gave UM three runs, but that wasn't enough to close the gap as SNU went on a tear once more, cracking two singles and a three RBI homer to extend their lead to 21-8 at the end of inning four.

Between the next three innings, both squads traded some runs, but SNU was able to outscore the Marauders 5-2, highlighted by Tanner Bare and Colby Entwistle home runs that ultimately lifted SNU to a  26-10 final score.

SNU totaled 22 hits in Game 2 that rewarded them with 22 RBIs and four home runs.

SNU will see its first Arkansas trip this weekend against Harding to open GAC play. The Storm will gear up for a single game on Friday, February 17th at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader the following Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
