Battle of the Storms Goes SNU's Way

No. 18 Southern Nazarene grabs their seventh win of the season over Southeastern Oklahoma State

DURANT, Okla. - The #18 Crimson Storm hit the road to open up GAC play at Southeastern Oklahoma State. In an offensive showdown, the Storm grabbed their seventh victory of the season, 68-62, over the Savage Storm.

Southern Nazarene (7-0, 1-0 GAC) looked to continue a hot start to their season after tabbing in at No. 18 on the WBCA DII Women's Basketball Poll this week. They also looked to continue their win streak against the Savage Storm (4-3, 0-1 GAC) after taking both games from SE last season in Bethany and on the road.

The Savage Storm stunned the Crimson Storm to begin the game going on a quick 4-0 run as SNU struggled to get on the board. Shannon Burton made it to the charity stripe to earn the Storm their first points of the game. A SE three-pointer stretched their lead to 7-2, but the Storm remained calm. Hannah Giddey found Jena Bay twice to continue to chip away at the Savage Storm lead. SNU utilized free throws to put them within one to end the quarter, 11-10.

The Storm went ahead to begin quarter two but SE responded with a three to go back on top. Hannah Duncan sank a three to grab the lead back, 15-14. The squads traded points from there until Abbie Jiles hit a three to pull the Crimson Storm ahead 22-18. SE had a response and ultimately tied the score 22 all. Lauryn Reither and Jiles' long balls extended the SNU lead 28-22. Both teams got one last bucket in before the half, but Southern Nazarene led 30-24.

Southeastern quickly tied the score to begin the second half, 30-30. Reither got the offense going again with a three-pointer to give SNU back the lead. The Savage Storm responded with a 6-0 run to go ahead 36-33. Bay halted the SE momentum with a three-pointer to put the Storm back in front. The Storm offense caught fire and went on to grab their biggest lead of the game to end the third quarter 51-43.

Giddey scored in the paint to open up the fourth quarter and stretch the SNU lead to 10. SE was not afraid and responded to every Crimson Storm point from there. The Savage Storm found themselves at the free throw line where they collected two points and cut the lead, 57-56. The Storm went to work in the paint slowly pulling away from SE until the clock ran out of time. Southern Nazarene was able to sneak by with a 68-62 victory over the Savage Storm.

Lauryn Reither led SNU in the points category tallying 19, while shooting .500 from beyond the arc. Abbie Jiles followed with 15 points and nine rebounds of her own. Hannah Giddey remained aggressive in the paint collecting her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Jena Bay also made a huge impact off the bench for SNU adding in her own 13 points.
