Patriots Steal Match In Three Sets

Southern Nazarene falls short in non conference game with Dallas Baptist, 3-0

BETHANY, Okla. — In their last non conference game of the 2023 season, Southern Nazarene Volleyball fell to Dallas Baptist in three straight sets.

The Patriots are not a new opponent to the Crimson Storm as these two teams have met eight times previously. Throughout the series, DBU has held five wins, including Saturday's victory, versus the Storm's three with most of those wins coming from their home floor.

Dallas Baptist stumped Southern Nazarene with a fierce offense, featuring a .297 hitting percentage and 46 total kills.

The Storm were neck and neck with the Patriots at the start of the opening set, until a 5-0 DBU run gave them a 6-3 edge. SNU fought to a two-point game midway through, but a few Storm errors kept the Patriots ahead the rest of the way and Dallas Baptist went on to win set 1, 25-17.

SNU quickly adjusted their defense and forced the Patriots to commit multiple errors early in set 2, enough to put the Storm ahead 9-4. Dallas Baptist rattled that deficit off with a round of kills and a few service aces, soon jumping in front to a four point lead at 16-12. SNU did their best to cut the gap, but the Patriots answered every Storm attack and ended up grabbing set 2, 25-19.

Now down 2-0, the pressure was on for Southern Nazarene. The Storm made it a much more difficult match for the Patriots in set 3, keeping a close margin that eventually was stretched after two explosive scoring runs that put SNU ahead 16-14. Dallas Baptist regained the lead in the next few possessions, but a kill from Rayanna Mauldin tied the set at 20-20.

The teams traded points from there and Dallas Baptist was the first to reach set point at 24-23. The Crimson Storm faced a tough blow after not being able to dig up the match-winning kill delivered by the Patriots and DBU stole set 3, 25-23 to secure the match in three sets.

Up Next

Southern Nazarene will return to GAC action on Tuesday, October 31st in Alva to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. The Storm swept the Rangers the last time the two teams met this season in September.
