SNU Falls to No. 24 Fort Hays

Three-goal first half propels No. 24 Tigers to defeat SNU 3-1 in Bethany

BETHANY, Okla. —  In just their third home game of the season, Southern Nazarene returned to Wes Harmon Field for an intense conference matchup with No. 24 Fort Hays State, losing to the Tigers 3-1.

The reigning 2021 GAC/MIAA Champions, Fort Hays State (6-2-3, 4-0-1 GAC/MIAA), broke into the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll as the No. 24 spot announced earlier this week, proving to have carried over their success from the previous season. Heading into this awaited matchup, the Storm (3-4-3, 1-1-2 GAC/MIAA) had not forgotten their historic run last season, defeating Fort Hays to be crowned the GAC/MIAA Regular Season Champions.

Meeting for the first time this season, an energetic Tigers squad jumped on top early, exploding for a three-goal first half that ultimately determined their 3-1 victory.

Just beyond the 13th minute of the match, FHSU punched one in to take the early 1-0 start. Just 18 seconds later, the ball would hit the back of the net once more for the Tigers, propelling them to a quick 2-0 advantage over SNU.

SNU took every opportunity in sight, with shots from Rennato Ramos, Unaiz Shajani, and Eric Romero flying shortly after, but all were just shy of a score.

The Tigers continued to step on the gas, scoring another just beyond the 23rd minute to cruise to a fast 3-0 lead in the first half.

The defense picked up on both sides, leading to a scoring stall for the remainder of the first half. The first 45 minutes were up and both squads headed to the locker rooms with Fort Hays claiming a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, SNU took control on offense as Unaiz Shajani assisted Shun Kushima for the Storm goal, giving SNU the 3-1 trail. SNU continued to fight for any offensive burst, but the attacks were not landing in their favor.

SNU kept the Tigers from seeing any other goals in the match, but couldn't continue their momentum on the offensive end as every shot was off the mark.

90 minutes was reached and Fort Hays walked away with the 3-1 victory.

Kushima finished with one shot and one goal while Shajani added two shots and one shot on goal to his assist.

Harei Maeda and Alvaro Sanchez each tallied three shots with one shot on goal

SNU will host Newman Saturday, October 1st to continue conference play. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
