BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene bounced back from their loss to Fort Hays State on Thursday, taking down Newman 5-1 Saturday night in Bethany.
The Storm (4-4-3, 2-1-2) dominated the match, exploding for 22 shots and 10 shots on goal, only allowing the Jets (0-10-1, 0-5-0) to tack on one score in the match.
Southern Nazarene took control and never looked back. In the 27th minute, Esteban Ramirez passed to an open Daniel Trojman for SNU's first goal of the night. Three minutes later, Orlando Castro darted down the field and made himself available for Unaiz Shajani to shoot him a pass for a goal, making that SNU's second of the game. Castro's score kept the Storm above the Jets at 2-0 moving into halftime.
SNU hoarded the ball on their side of the field out of the break, looking for every opportunity to extend their lead. Early in the second half, Trojman and Alex Da Silva fired back-to-back shots that both hit the goal post, allowing the Jets to take a deep breath. Shajani picked the pace back up in the 74th minute, moving past the Jets to score the Storm's third goal, assisted by Leonardo Schulz.
Minutes later, Nathaniel Mederos tacked on SNU's fourth goal with a solo shot to the back of the net off of a free kick, pushing SNU up to a 4-0 lead.
Newman snuck in a goal late in the second half, looking for any chance at a comeback as they now trailed SNU 4-1. In the 84th minute, SNU extended their lead even further as Shajani found Bruno Ferreira in the gap for a goal.
Newman could not answer in the few minutes remaining and SNU earned their second conference victory, finishing 5-1 over the Jets.
Adding to SNU's performance, Da Silva put up four shots with two on goal and Harei Maeda finished with three shots and one shot on goal.
SNU will remain on their home field next week, hosting Harding on Thursday, October 6th for a 5 p.m. kick-off. The Bisons have also picked up a win over Newman, earning them a 1–3-1 conference start.
