SNU Falls to ECU

Crimson Storm fall 3-2 in first conference match to East Central

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene faced a tough battle Friday night, falling to East Central 3-2 in their conference opening match.

Ranked first in the GAC before this match, The Storm (3-3, 0-1 GAC) had a target on their back. The Tigers (1-4-2, 1-0 GAC) tested the Storm all evening with their daring offense, putting up 12 shots on goal out of 22 shots. ECU also made it a physical match, totaling 12 total fouls.

SNU ran out on top early in the match as Kenzie Macklin sunk one in at the 13th minute. The Tigers answered a few minutes later with a solo shot of their own, knotting the score up at 1-1.

Karla Ramirez took back the lead for the Storm in the 23rd minute as she sent a bullet high and into the back of the net, courtesy of a pass from Macklin. Ramirez's goal put SNU back on top at 2-1 over ECU.

The Tigers tried to answer, but SNU's defensive front remained strong. The first half came to an end, and SNU held on to a 2-1 lead.

East Central tied the score 12 minutes into the second half, running past the Storm to take the match to 2-2. The Tigers still had momentum a minute later as they scored another goal, gaining their first lead of the contest at 3-2 over SNU.

Still with a lot of time left, SNU stepped on the gas, firing multiple shots to try and combat the deficit, but all were off the mark.

After a Tiger foul was committed inside the box in the 84th minute, the Storm were awarded a penalty kick to try and knot the score up. The shot was just in line with the fingertips of the Tiger goalie, resulting in an ECU save.

SNU scrambled in the final few minutes for a gutsy comeback, but were robbed of opportunities as ECU took their time between possessions.

90 minutes was reached, and ECU came away with the 3-2 win to open conference play.

Macklin had an impressive night, totaling four shots, two shots on goal, and grabbed a goal and an assist. Ramirez kept the Tigers on their toes with her six total shots, four shots on goal, and one goal.

Josie Van Pelt was also a contributor to the Storm's offense, totaling three shots with two shots on goal.

Southern Nazarene will see their first conference road game Thursday, September 22nd as they face Harding in Searcy, Arkansas. Harding has 12 wins to the Storm's five throughout matchup history. Harding currently sits last in the GAC standings, holding a 1-5-1 overall record and a conference loss to Ouachita Baptist. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
