Panthers Edge Storm

Storm come up short in non-conference battle with Drury

SPRINGFIELD, MO — With a win and a tie under their belt to start the season, Southern Nazarene headed East for another non-conference matchup, taking on Drury University where the Storm (1-1-1, 0-0 GAC) were outscored by three as the Panthers (2-1, 0-0 GLVC) came up with the 4-1 victory.

The Panthers tried their hand at every offensive opportunity, totaling 21 shots that afternoon. Although they struggled to find any offensive gains, the Storm were more consistent by the number, getting just as many shots on goal as Drury with eight.

Drury had the lead first, sending one through in the first 12 minutes of the match. The Storm answered just past the 30 minute marker as Unaiz Shajani punched in his first goal of his career with the Storm, after Daniel Trojman found him for a low shot to the back to make it a 1-1 tie. The tide turned just seconds after as Drury shot one past a swarm of SNU defenders to grow their lead to 2-1.

Just before the half, the Panthers were able to sneak one more in past SNU's defending backline, moving further away from the Storm in the scoring category as they headed into the second period up 3-1.

SNU had a chance to cut Drury's lead down to a single score after Esteban Ramirez sped past the Panthers to dish to an open Shajani, whose shot was denied by the Drury keeper. This was the narrative for the rest of the second period. Shots were exchanged by both sides but none would land successfully for either squad, until Drury had one more in the tank, finding an opening in the Storm defense to push their lead to 4-1 with just under eight minutes remaining.

The Storm were unable to gain any sort of momentum moving into the final minutes, and Drury ended in victory with a final score of 4-1.

Shajani gave SNU an offensive burst early in the match, finishing with two shots and two on goal, and claimed SNU's only score that afternoon.

Bruno Ferreira had a perfect 3-3 finish on the offensive end, while Trojman finished with two shots and one shot on goal to go along with his assist.

Juan Rodarte and Eric Romero each finished with one shot and shot on goal a piece.

In goal, Joshua Nichols subbed in later that match to tally three saves against the Panthers.

The Storm head back to Oklahoma City for another non-conference weekend matchup against Oklahoma Christian. Kickoff is set for Saturday, September 3rd at 7:30 p.m.
