SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Southern Nazarene University Women's Soccer team opened the 2022 season down South in San Antonio, Texas, matching up against the St. Mary's Rattlers who took the 4-0 win over the Storm.
The Rattlers (1-0, 0-0 LSC) had the offensive upper hand that match, putting up 28 shots and getting 19 of them to land on goal. The Storm (0-1, 0-0 GAC) offense couldn't gain a spark, but they brought a great defensive fight as freshman goalkeeper Gianna Bonnett tallied 15 saves on the night.
St. Mary's started off hot, taking 14 shots and getting nine of them to land in range in the first half. Two of those shots were a success as the Rattlers scored two in the first 30 minutes of play.
Just before the Storm could reset going into the second period, St. Mary's would score another to take their lead to 3-0. SNU wouldn't go down without a fight as freshmen Camryn Peter and Abbi Johnson tested the Rattlers defense with a couple of shots in the second half that would land on goal. None would reach the back of the net, leaving St. Mary's to punch in one more in the final minutes to claim the 4-0 lead over the Storm.
Head Coach Josh Smith saw some great freshmen exposure in the season opener as Johnson and Peter each tallied one shot on goal in their college debut.
SNU will suit up once more this week as they head to Dallas, Texas to face Dallas Christian College on Saturday, August 22nd with kickoff set for 2:00 PM.
