Storm Split Doubleheader with a Huge Series Finale Win

SNU rattles off a 0-2 start to the series with a 26-run win over East Central in the series finale

BETHANY, Okla. — After falling to the Tigers (4-31, 3-21 GAC) in the series opener and the first game of the doubleheader, the Storm (8-28, 5-19 GAC) had a complete 360 degree performance late Saturday afternoon as they used 26 hits and eight homeruns to notch the series finale victory.

Game 1

Lots off offensive high notes for both squads in the first, with East Central throwing the first punch, putting up four quick runs by an SNU throwing error and a three-run blast to the back.

The Storm answered, starting off with an EJ Taylor bomb over the center field fence that sent in Cole Embrey for the quick 4-2 trail. Oliver Wilson's double would plate Colby Entwistle and Brian Brown shortly after, tieing the contest at four a piece. Jonathan Crist quickly gave SNU the lead after his double rewarded Wilson the trip home, concluding the inning up 5-4.

East Central caught fire in the third, starting with a double and a single to earn them two runs over the Storm. The Tigers would score three more, brought by a three-run shot to left field to take the 10-5 lead. To cap off that inning, the Tigers would sneak in two more runs before the side was retired, ending the 3rd up 13-5 over SNU.

Southern Nazarene put up another lead-off homer, this time, by DJ Van Atten who smacked one to left field to give SNU the 6-13 trail.

East Central hit a scoring slump in he 4th giving SNU a chance to close the gap. After Brown's double to advance Embrey to third, Entwistle's sacrifice fly would earn the Storm two RBI's, ending the 4th behind 8-13.

The 5th was quiet from both sides, but the Tigers made some noise the sixth, leading off the inning with two back-to-back solo blast, increasing their to seven runs over SNU. ECU pulled off three more runs that inning, expanding their lead to 10 runs at 18-8.

After SNU saw three quick outs in the 6th, East Central let one fly over the left field fence to record two RBI's, earning the dangerous 20-8 advantage in the seventh.

Embrey's double to left field would send in Drake Irby, kick starting their aim at a comeback. Already with two outs on the board, SNU would reach their third after Taylor's ground ball was snagged by the shortstop, handing the 20-9 Game 2 victory to the Tigers.

Taylor's and Van Atten's solo blasts contributed to their 1-5 and 1-4 finishes respectively.

Entwistle had a perfect 3-3 bat appearance, earning two RBI's and a double. Jonathan Crist had a hot 3-4 finish, recording an RBI and double in the process.

Oliver Wilson recorded two RBI's and a double two earn him a 1-4 finish.

Game 2

The 30-minute break served SNU well as they started off the second game with four back-to-back solo homeruns in the first inning. Taking out some frustrations from the first two meetings against the Tigers, Embrey, Taylor, Entwistle, and Van Atten each cracked one over the fence to give the Storm a speedy 4-0 start to Game 3. Weston Hicks' single would plate Irby to make it a quick 5-0 lead for SNU.

East Central tried their hand at a home run and did so in the 2nd, smacking one back to left field for two RBI's to end their scoring drought with a 2-5 trail behind SNU.

SNU continued to tack on the runs, putting up their most runs scored in a single inning this season with a total of 12, largely controlled by two more consecutive blasts by Embrey and Taylor, propelling SNU to a smooth 17-2 lead moving into the 4th.

East Central struggled to rekindle their rhythm, leaving SNU to pack on another score, of course by a huge blast to left field by Noah Ellis, bumping up the Crimson Storm's lead to 18-2.

ECU continued to throw in pitching changes late, but that didn't stall Storm as they continued to pile on the runs. The Storm earned two in the 4th, courtesy of Brown's reach on a fielding error that scored Irby and Entwistle's single that plated Crist, moving the lead to 20-2.

SNU was still hot and ready from behind the dish, scoring seven in the 5th, capped off by Entwistle's second homerun of the game as he smacked on to left field score Landon Hamm and EJ Taylor, increasing the gap to 27-2 in the 5th.

In the 6th, Weston Hicks' double would plate Mason Daly for the score. Hamm got a chance at the plate, ripping one down right field for a single to advance Hicks home for the 29-2 score.

With the victory in sight, SNU was sitting pretty, facing one more ECU chance at a gutsy comeback. The Tigers managed to put up a solo homer of their own to add one more run on their side, but they that was the last of any scoring and SNU claimed the 29-3 series finale win.

Entwistle led SNU at the plate, ripping two homeruns to earn a 2-4 finish while recording a game-high six RBI's.

Embrey had an impressive at-bat as well, recording a 3-5 finish also with two homeruns, earning five RBI's in he process.

Taylor continued his outstanding play, finishing 4-5 at the plate with four RBI's and two homeruns to his name.

Noah Ellis had a 3-5 finish with a homerun as did DJ Van Atten who also recorded a homerun to fonish 1-6 on the afternoon.

Oliver Wilson pitched a complete game, holding the Tigers to just three runs that game, recording five strikeouts in the process.

SNU will host a non-conference game against Mid-America Christian Tuesday at 2 p.m. before the kick off the Arkansas-Monticello series.
