Storm Split with Newman for 20th Win

Southern Nazarene splits non-conference double-header with Newman to earn 20th victory of the season

WICHITA, Kan.—Southern Nazarene earned their 20th win of the season after splitting Tuesday's non-conference double-header with Newman. The Storm overcame a 4-0 deficit in game one to win 12-4, but fell in five innings, 8-0 in game two.

Game 1:

Southern Nazarene trailed 4-0 after five innings in game one, but stormed back with a vengeance in the sixth inning, rattling off 10 runs, 7 of which came before they even recorded an out. The Storm would go on to take the game 12-4.

SNU's offense was stifled for five innings, recording just 3 hits, but they exploded in the sixth with 9 runs. It all began with back-to-back home runs from Natalie Jones and Hailey Evans. From there, the offense seemed to click for everyone. They added 7 more hits, including 3 doubles and an Emma Swearingen home run, as they blew the game open at 10-4.

Southern Nazarene was not done there, though, as they added two more runs in the seventh inning as Brooklyn Sullivan got in on the home run action with a two-run blast of her own. Sullivan led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with the homerun, a double, and 4 RBIs.

Hailey Evans, Emma Swearingen, Hailie Fellers, and Anna Icenhower also had multi-hit games.

Hannah Morales came off the bench to rope a two-RBI pinch-hit double.

Jennifer Romero-Ivarson followed up her no-hitter on Saturday with her 13th win of the season. She has now won each of her last six starts.

Game 2:

Unfortunately for the Crimson Storm, the offense they saw in the final two innings of game one never carried over into game two. The Storm would fall in five innings as they were limited to just 1 hit in the ballgame.

Newman scored four in the first inning, which proved to be more than enough to secure the win. They walked SNU off with an RBI single in the fifth that pushed the score to 8-0, giving the Jets the run-rule victory.

SNU's lone hit came in the second inning off the bat of Anna Icenhower. The Storm's final 11 batters were all retired, with the only base runner reaching base on a dropped third strike.

Newman and Southern Nazarene will meet again next Tuesday in Bethany, but before that, Southern Nazarene returns to Great American Conference play as they travel to Monticello for a three-game set with Arkansas-Monticello on Friday and Saturday. SNU had won nine straight over Monticello prior to the Blossoms taking the final game of last season's series. The teams will play a double-header on Friday at 1:00 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
