WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Maintaining a slim lead for much of the contest, Southern Nazarene Baseball was stumped by Southwestern as the Bulldogs' three-run 6th inning was just enough to take the series sweep with an 8-7 win over the Storm.
The Bulldog's (10-12, 5-7 GAC) owned the first score in the first, but the Storm (2-20, 0-12 GAC) quickly reclaimed the lead after a throwing error by SWOSU allowed Drake Irby's sacrifice bunt to plate Peyton Vinyard and DJ Van Atten.
The Bulldogs returned the favor, scoring two of their own off of a sacrifice bunt and single to right field that sent two home to send the score to 3-2.
The third inning was cold both ways, but SNU picked it up in the fourth after a balk by SWOSU would send Drake Irby home to tie the game at 3-3.
Southern Nazarene would end the tie after a Vinyard triple plated Van Atten, putting the score at 4-3. The Storm lead would quickly end as a Bulldog fly out would earn another run, tieing the game once again at 4-4.
SNU claimed a two-run lead in the 6th after a Bulldog error would plate Cole Embrey and EJ Taylor. SWOSU turned up the heat in the sixth, scoring three run's to reclaim the advantage at 7-6.
Scoring was non-existent for both squads in the seventh, but Southwestern ended the stall with the single that would plate another Bulldog runner, taking the score to 8-6 with one final inning up for grabs.
The Storm were only able to get put up one run in the ninth with Ellis' single sending in Vinyard for the score.
Too outs too many struck SNU, giving SWOSU the final 8-7 victory to earn them a 3-0 series.
Vinyard showed up and showed out for the Storm, finishing 2-4 on the game with an RBI, double, and triple for the Storm.
Ellis claimed the other RBI for SNU that afternoon, finishing 1-1, while Van Atten finished 2-5.
Casey Minchey, Triston Graves, and Oliver Wilson all saw time on the mound for SNU.
The Storm will remain on the road over Spring Break as they head back to Arkansas to meet with Arkansas Tech for a Friday single game on March 18th followed by a doubleheader Saturday March 19th.
