SNU Bats Unable to Wake Up

Crimson Storm fall in early matchup with St. Mary's to close out Arkansas Tech Classic

CONROE, Texas—It was an early morning for the Crimson Storm softball team as they had to turn around and play at 9:00 a.m. following three games just yesterday. Despite a great effort in the circle, the SNU bats never woke up for the early game, leading to a 3-0 shutout loss to St. Mary's in the final game of the Arkansas Tech Classic.

It was a tough weekend for the Storm (0-4), who were not only faced with some really strong opposition, but also dealt with multiple game changes and an ultimately disadvantageous schedule of three games on Sunday and an early 9:00 a.m. game time on Monday.

St. Mary's (3-2) came off of a pair of double-headers on Friday and Saturday, splitting both days. After exploding for nine runs in yesterday's finale, Jennifer Romero-Ivarson shut the Rattlers down on Monday morning. She would hold them hitless through the first 4.1 innings, but errors from the Crimson Storm defense proved costly.

Southern Nazarene committed four errors in the game. Two of those errors came in the fourth inning, allowing St. Mary's to score a run without a hit. That run would prove to be the difference as SNU never got on the scoreboard.

The Rattlers extended their lead in the seventh, though, to give themselves a bit more breathing room. They scored twice, thanks in part to two more SNU errors. The Storm were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game.

Romero-Ivarson pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters and limiting St. Mary's to just four hits. None of their runs were earned.

Sydney Sundbye was fantastic at the plate, but the rest of the bats were unable to ever bring her around to score. Sundbye finished 2-for-3 with a double and triple in the game.

The Crimson Storm will get a few days break before returning to the early season festival action next weekend. SNU takes part in the annual UCO/OC festival beginning on Friday. The Storm will play a single game on Friday, followed by double-headers on both Saturday and Sunday. Friday's first pitch is set for 2:15 against Fort Hays State at Oklahoma Christian University.
