Late Rally Comes Up Short

Storm bring tying run to the plate in the final inning but diving catch ends rally

BETHANY, Okla.—A tough day at the plate saw Southern Nazarene fell to Nebraska-Kearney 7-3 on Saturday afternoon in day two of the Regional Festival.

Southern Nazarene (2-10) struggled to get their offense clicking until late as they were shutout for the first five innings of the ballgame. The Storm held their own early as Nebraska-Kearney (3-6) did not get on the board for the first three innings, either. They eventually opened up a lead with a three run fourth inning, though. They proceeded to keep the runs coming with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to build a commanding 7-0 lead.

SNU showed fight late. They finally got on the board with an RBI double off the bat of Natalie Jones. The Storm then held Kearney scoreless in the top half of the seventh inning and faced a tough uphill climb in the seventh, trailing 7-1. They certainly made things interesting, though, as SNU was able to bring the tying run to the plate as they loaded the bases following a run-scoring wild pitch and a Liana Heshiki RBI single.

Having already driven in one run, Natalie Jones stepped into the box as SNU's last hope. She got her pitch and roped a line drive into left field, but a diving catch saved the game for the Lopers and ended SNU's hopes at a dramatic comeback.

The Storm return to action tomorrow with two games as they prepare for a 12:15 p.m. meeting with Northeastern State before taking on Cameron at 2:30 p.m. to close out the Regional Festival.
