BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene fell just shy of a draw with Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday night as the Bulldogs claimed a one-goal lead late in the final minutes to secure the 2-1 win.
The Bulldogs (4-4-4, 4-0-2) fired a total of 27 shots in the match, but were only able to get seven shots on goal. The Storm (4-6-2, 1-4-2) were behind in the shots category, only taking nine that evening, but were right behind SWOSU with five total shots on goal, making it a very close contest.
The Bulldogs opened their attack early, as SWOSU's all-time scorer Alimata Rawbo sent one into the back of the net in the third minute to take an early 1-0 lead over the Storm.
Shots from Fallon Weatherford, Kaitlyn Deaton, and Abbi Johnson kept the Bulldogs busy on defense, but all were just shy of landing a score. Both teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the first half, but the score would remain 1-0 heading into halftime.
Out of the break, SWOSU continued to hold on to their one-goal lead. SNU fired a round of shots early in the second half to try and cut the deficit, but every attack was off the mark.
SNU silenced the Bulldogs in the 75th minute as Alyssa Adams sent a shot in straight to the back of the net to tie the match with SWOSU at 1-1.
SWOSU answered later in the 85th minute, scoring a goal to reclaim their lead at 2-1 with just five minutes remaining in the match.
The Storm scrambled for offensive opportunities, with SNU's Kaitlyn Deaton getting a shot off with just 15 seconds left to potentially end the match in a draw. Her shot was saved by the Bulldog keeper and SWOSU headed back to Weatherford with the slim 2-1 win.
Weatherford, Deaton, Johnson, and Hannah Schaffer each tallied one shot on goal.
The Storm will remain in Bethany Thursday, October 13th for a matchup with Ouachita Baptist, whom the Storm have already seen this season. In their last match with the Tigers, SNU fell short 2-1 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Thursday's game begins at 5 p.m.
