Storm Fall Short

Fort Hays’ early lead keeps them alive in 1-0 win over SNU

HAYS, Kansas — After building up a four-game win streak, Southern Nazarene fell to Fort Hays State 1-0 on the road on Thursday evening.

It was a nail-biter for the entire 90 minutes as both squads put on tough defenses to keep one another out of the goal. The Storm (7-5-3, 5-2-2) got off 19 shots in the match, but Fort Hays only allowed four of those to land in range. SNU put up a wall for both halves, but the Tigers' (8-4-4, 6-2-2) only shot on goal in the first half would seal them the 1-0 victory.

SNU looked to get on top early as they took four shots in search of the first goal. Defense from both sides kept any offensive action from building until Fort Hays turned the tables late in the first half with a shot to the back of the net, earning the 1-0 lead.

SNU did not answer with the three minutes remaining and went into halftime down one to the Tigers.

The match remained defense-heavy as both squads kept the ball away from the goal. SNU continued to take shot after shot, but all were just outside of landing a score.

Late in the second half, Alvaro Sanchez, Harei Maeda, and Daniel Trojman sent in a couple of shots in range, but the FHSU keeper defended the Tigers' lead and denied the Storm any chance of tying the match.

With no time remaining, SNU was unable to answer and Fort Hays survived with the 1-0 win.

Juan Rodarte finished with three shots and one on goal and Trojman finished with two shots and one on goal.

SNU remains on the road to continue conference play as they head to Wichita, Kansas to take on Newman, Saturday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m. SNU took care of the Jets earlier this season, earning the 5-1 win in Bethany.
