SNU wards off Jets with 2-1 win in Kansas

WICHITA, Kansas — In their last regular season road game, Southern Nazarene took care of business in Wichita Kansas as they defeated Newman 2-1.

The Storm (8-5-3, 6-2-2) handled the Jets (1-12-3, 1-7-2) in their first meeting this season and did it again this match, building momentum in the first half that would keep Newman playing catch-up for the remainder of the game.

The Storm set the pace early on in the match as Bruno Ferreira would take advantage of a free kick in the 13th minute, sending one right past the Newman keeper for the score. A couple of offsides calls would keep SNU's lead at 1-0 for the majority of the first half, until Nathaniel Mederos earned SNU's second goal with a quick shot to the back of the net. SNU scared Newman in the 42nd minute with another potential goal as Alessandro Alfaro's attempt would strike the crossbar.

Alfaro's attempt would be the last of the first half and SNU headed into halftime up 2-0 over the Jets.

Newman would answer the Storm's lead in the 54th minute with a goal of their own, trailing SNU by just one now at 2-1.

The rest of the second half was a back-and-forth affair with only a few shots taken by both teams. Tight defense would keep Southern Nazarene and Newman from gaining any momentum the rest of the match.

The Storm held on tight to their lead for the remainder of the game and came out on top for a final 2-1 victory.

SNU has just two conference games remaining in the regular season, with both to be played in Bethany. SNU will start with Ouachita Baptist Thursday, October 27th for a 5 p.m. kickoff. SNU took care of the Tigers earlier this season in Arkansas, winning that match 5-1.
