Bisons Edge Storm

Late second half goal by SNU was not enough in Harding’s 2-1 win in Bethany

BETHANY, Okla. — Falling behind early in the match, Southern Nazarene put up quite the fight in the second half, but fell short 2-1 to Harding on Wes Harmon Field.

The match was pretty even between both teams with each squad recording 13 total shots. The Bisons (2-9-3, 1-5-2) were able to put up six shots on goal in the match while the Storm (4-8-2, 1-6-2) got off four.

Harding took control of the game early, punching in a score just past the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead. SNU worked to answer, but the Bisons grew their lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute, getting deep inside SNU's back line to punch in another goal.

The Storm could not create much offense with the first half time remaining, going into halftime down 2-0 to Harding.

Out of the break, SNU made it hard for Harding's defense, firing multiple shots to get back into the contest. A couple of good looks from Segen Henley, Josie Van Pelt, and Karla Ramirez kept the Bisons on their toes, but were all just short of landing inside the goal.

In the 84th minute, Abbi Johnson found an open Kaitlyn Deaton inside the gap and Deaton shot one straight into the goal, giving SNU some excitement with the six minutes remaining in the match.

Harding fought to keep SNU from gaining another score, turning up their defense with the final minutes ticking down. Van Pelt was able to fire one more shot before the buzzer sounded, but it was off the mark and Harding squeezed by with the 2-1 win.

Deaton finished with two shots to go along with her goal while Van Pelt finished with a total of four shots and one shot on goal.

Johnson added one shot on goal to her assist while Henley finished two shots.

SNU will suit up again Tuesday, October 18th as they head to Shawnee, Oklahoma to face Oklahoma Baptist. SNU tied their last match with the Bisons 1-1 after OBU pulled off a last-second goal to secure the draw. Game time is at 6 p.m.
