BETHANY, Okla. — Not a happy ending for the Southern Nazarene Men's Soccer team Thursday night as No. 6 West Texas A&M defended their ranking with a last second Golden Goal that defeated the Storm 1-0 in overtime.
It was a battle down to the wire in SNU's (3-2) fifth game of the season as nationally ranked West Texas A&M (3-0) stole the victory with just a single shot in the final seconds of overtime. Both teams took 13 shots, but the Buffaloe's four to SNU's one gave them the competitive edge they needed to leave Bethany with another win in the books.
Also receiving votes in the Top 25 poll, SNU matched up well with the No. 6 Buffs, as the score was at a standstill the entire 90 minutes of play. With both teams taking every chance they had at claiming the lead, not a single attempt was successful which sent both teams into overtime as the final half was up.
Nine minutes into overtime and the score remained 0-0. Thinking a second overtime was in sight, SNU let up at the last second and allowed WT to sneak by with a steal and a Golden Goal right at the 99:59 marker.
Angel Lopez was responsible for SNU's one on target shot out of his three shots attempted. Recent GAC Player of the Week
Nathaniel Mederos tallied four shots on the night while
Ramiro Jimenez notched three saves in goal.
The Storm head to Dallas this weekend for one final game against Dallas Baptist before the start of conference play where they will host Ouachita Baptist September 23rd at 7 p.m.
