ALVA, OK – The Southern Nazarene Women's Soccer team turned over a new leaf today as they took on the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva and prevailed 1-0 in a double- overtime thriller.
In a match that was neck-and-neck the entire way, SNU (1-4-0, 1-4-0 GAC) turned in their highest shot performance of the year with 22 attempts. The Crimson Storm held NWOSU (0-4-1, 0-4-1 GAC) to 16 shots, and just nine attempts on target.
From the first whistle, both clubs went at one another as neither passed a ball beyond a goalkeeper in regulation time. It two more than one overtime period for a winner to arise as Freshman Josie Van Pelt chipped in the winning goal in walk-off fashion at 103rd minute of the game, assisted by Karsyn Matthews and Delaney Stewart.
Individually, Josie Van Pelt led the Storm as scored the lone goal after attempting just one more shot in the contest. Delaney Stewart shot plenty and often as she finished with seven shots, an assist, with one shot on target. Karsyn Matthews fired two shots, both on goal, and assisted on the game winning score.
Nikki Lohr and Kaitlyn Deaton each attempted three shots with two of Deaton's shots hitting on target and one of Lohrs. Other notables were Hope Berry and Sydney Davenport who each attempted a shot on goal. Inside the net, Maci Attala held her own facing a total nine shots as she walked away with eight saves.
Southern Nazarene will be back in action on April 3rd for Senior Day at the Wanda Rhodes Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m.
