BETHANY – Southern Nazarene's volleyball team was back inside the Sawyer Center on Wednesday night looking to make amends with Northwestern Oklahoma State after dropping the first match in Alva earlier this year. NWOSU completed the season sweep as they downed SNU 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 20-25, 21-25) on Dig Pink Night.
The Crimson Storm (3-7, 3-6) dropped their third straight match as the Rangers (7-4, 4-4 GAC) defense led the way with 13 blocks on the night. The Storm held NWOSU to a .114 hitting clip, but the 34 total errors from SNU played a pivotal factor in the match. Southern Nazarene hit .109 and registered five service aces and nine blocks, while dishing out 51 assists as well. They tallied 53 kills, eight more than Northwestern, but also had eight service errors.
Meagan Ellis led the Storm attack with a team-high 14 kills to go along with eight digs. Joining Ellis with double-digit kills was sophomore
Sunny Batschelett who finished with 10 kills, four digs, and a couple of blocks.
Jacy Braziel added nine kills, while
Whitney Bowie registered eight to go along with six blocks.
Breckynn Myers finished with 25 assists while
Jessie Fouts came off the bench to dish out 19 assists.
Logan Matthews carried the weight on the defensive side of the net with a game-high 28 digs to go with a couple of aces.
Madeline Lynch chipped in with a game-high three aces as well.
Southern Nazarene came out red-hot in the first set as they racked up four aces to lead the charge. They hit .281 which carried them to a 25-21 set win over Northwestern to take the 1-0 lead. The Rangers responded with strong defense in the second stanza, holding SNU to a .055 hitting percentage and 12 errors in the set. The Storm battled however as NWOSU narrowly escaped with a 26-24 win to tie the match 1-1.
Northwestern Oklahoma State really got their defense going in the third and fourth sets as they racked up seven total blocks. The Rangers hit .205 in the third, while the Storm hit .100 as NWOSU took the frame 25-20 to go up 2-1. Head coach
Kevin Ingram and company were looking for a spark in the fourth set on their home floor, but the Rangers defense came through once again. Five blocks and three aces propelled Northwestern in the fourth set as they held SNU to a .064 clip and sealed the match with a 25-21 set win.
Southern Nazarene will wrap up the regular season next Tuesday night as they host No. 6 ranked Oklahoma Baptist on Senior Night inside the Sawyer Center. First serve with the Bison is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
