RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – After dropping four of the last six Great American Conference games entering the weekend, Southern Nazarene's softball team got out of their funk on Friday night with a 6-2 victory over Arkansas Tech.
The Crimson Storm's (9-12, 7-5 GAC) bats ignited for 12 hits in the contest as they nearly produced their third shutout victory of the season. The pitching and defense was sharp all game long against the Golden Suns (7-6, 5-4 GAC) as ATU's two runs didn't come until the final half-inning.
Brooklyn Sparkman got the start in the circle for SNU and pitched phenomenally. She tossed 6.2 innings and struck out 11 hitters and allowed just the two runs in the final inning.
Chelsea Vandiver came out of the bullpen in the last inning and shut the door on ATU, earning her first save of the season. At the plate,
Mahina Sauer continued her stellar play with a 3-for-4 finish. She scored two runs in her four at-bats.
Caitlyn Curlee came out of a mini-slump with two RBI's at the dish as she went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Joining Sauer and Curlee with multiple hits was Sparkman who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Sydney Sundbye had the game's othert RBI as she finished 1-for-2 while
Chloe Pender,
Victoria Rodriguez and
Hailie Fellers all recorded hits for SNU as well.
Fellers got the party started in the top of the second when she doubled to center field to score Rodriguez to give Southern Nazarene the early 1-0 lead. The Crimson Storm extended their advantage in the third when Sundbye was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. Later in the inning,
Brooklyn Sullivan grounded out which scored
Sydney Everhart to push the lead to 3-0 for SNU.
In the fourth, Curlee's single scored Fellers and Sauer, while Sparkman's single scored Curlee to balloon the Storm lead to 6-0. The Golden Suns finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a couple of runs, but Vandiver came out of the pen and closed the door on any ATU comeback.
Southern Nazarene will wrap up the series with Arkansas Tech tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader. First pitch in game one of the day with the Golden Suns is set for 12:00 p.m.
