BETHANY, Okla – After coming off a huge 3-2 win against No. 13 Fort Hays State last week, the Southern Nazarene Men's soccer welcomed another ranked opponent into Wes Harmon Field on Friday night. No. 23 Rogers State made the trip to Bethany for a primetime contest against the Storm in which they would prevail in the last seconds of overtime to outlast SNU 1-0.
The Crimson Storm continue to make drastic improvements from last season as they seem to produce a new positive after every game. SNU out-shot the Hillcats 14-11 in the contest, with four of their shots hitting on target.
A physical matchup was expected in this evenly matched engagement as 19 fouls were called and four yellow cards were given.
Through the first half, the two clubs were neck as neither seemed to gain an advantage. The Crimson Storm were able to possess the ball for most of the half which explains their high volume of shots in the inaugural half. This trend shifted in the second half as the Hillcats started to gain more access to the ball and spend most of their time on SNU's side of the field.
Neither club budged as the score sat gridlocked at 0-0 with no time remaining. Therefore, an extra period was needed to decide a winner which turned out to be Rogers State as the Hillcats found a way to cross the net with little to no time remaining.
Nathaniel Mederos continued his impressive play as he accounted for six of the Storm's 14 total shots. Two of his attempts were on target. Close behind was Juan Rodarte who tallied five shots, one on goal. Orlando Castro, Angel Lopez, Esteban Ramirez were the other three to register attempts in the contest with Castro's shot being the only one on target. Ramiro Jimenez held things together inside the net as he tallied one save after facing 11 RSU shots.
Southern Nazarene will get on the road and travel to Wichita next week, after their two-game home stretch, to take on Newman on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
