WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southern Nazarene's softball team wrapped up their series with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Monday, and SNU dropped both games in heartbreaking fashion 11-10 and 9-8.
Both victories for the Bulldogs (5-6, 5-3 GAC) came on a walk-off hit on their home field as the doubleheader on Monday couldn't have been tighter between the two teams. The Crimson Storm (8-11, 6-5 GAC) committed seven total errors in the twin bill which proved costly in the waning moments of each game. SNU's bats stayed electric as they produced a total of 23 hits spread across the two battles.
Chelsea Vandiver got the start in the circle for the Storm in the first game of the day as she tossed 5.1 innings and struck out two Bulldogs on four hits and three runs, one of those earned.
Jayleigh Totten and
Brooklyn Sparkman each came in out of the bullpen for SNU as Sparkman eventually took the loss for the Storm.
Natalie Jones led the firework show at the plate for Southern Nazarene as she finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, one run scored and one double.
Hailie Fellers and
Brooklyn Sullivan each launched a home run as Fellers went 1-for-4 with three RBI while Sullivan drove in one and crossed the plate twice.
Skye Ah Yat finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored while
Caitlyn Curlee went 1-for-2 with a run scored as well.
Sydney Sundbye and Sparkman each finished with two hits in the game for SNU.
Southern Nazarene got the party started in the top of the first when Sparkman drove in Ah Yat to give SNU the early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs tied it with one run in the bottom of the first before Jones singled in the second to score
Chloe Pender to give the Storm the lead back at 2-1. Later in the inning, Sundbye scored on an error to extend the lead to 3-1 at the end of two innings. SWOSU added one more run in the third before Sullivan homered in the top of the fourth to make it 4-2 in favor of SNU.
The sixth inning was costly for the Storm as the Bulldog bats exploded for eight runs as they took a 10-4 lead heading into the final inning. SNU didn't quit however as they pulled off the stunning comeback in the top of the seventh. Fellers hit a three-run bomb to make it 10-7 before Jones doubled down the left field line to score Sullivan and Sundbye to cut it to 10-9. SNU tied the game 10-10 when Ah Yat singled to score Jones, but the Bulldogs got a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to take the game 11-10.
Cassidy Davila got the start for Southern Nazarene in the final game of the series as she tossed 3.0 innings and struck out three batters on four hits and just one run allowed.
Brooklyn Sparkman and
Chelsea Vandiver each saw action in relief as Sparkman tossed 4.0 innings while Vandiver provided 1.2 innings.
Mahina Sauer had arguably her best game of the season as she was unstoppable at the plate. She finished 4-for-5 with a career-high five RBI and two home runs. She also scored three runs and had a double as well. Sauer was one of four Storm hitters to notch a double as
Skye Ah Yat went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while
Caitlyn Curlee finished 1-for-4 at the dish with a run batted in.
Victoria Rodriguez recorded the other extra-bagger as she finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Natalie Jones and Sparkman each drove in a run for SNU while
Morgan Brannon scored a run as well.
Southern Nazarene struck gold in the top of the first as they pushed a couple of runs across the plate with Sauer's two-run bomb to take the early 2-0 lead. After a scoreless first, Southwestern Oklahoma State's bats woke up as they plated five runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 5-2 advantage. After the Bulldogs added one more run in the third to make it 6-2, Curlee doubled in the top of the fourth to score Sauer to cut the deficit to 6-3.
The fifth inning was a scoring frenzy as SNU scored five runs to re-take the lead at 8-6 before SWOSU got run across to trim the Storm advantage to 8-7 heading into the final two innings. After a scoreless sixth inning from both sides, SNU had a chance in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away but the Bulldogs bats wouldn't go away as they plated one to tie it up 8-8 and the game was forced to extra innings.
After the defenses flexed their muscles in the eighth inning, Southwestern got one run across in the bottom of the ninth to complete the series sweep of the Storm.
Southern Nazarene will have a quick turnaround as they're back in action on Wednesday afternoon at home for a non-conference contest with Washburn before hitting the road to Arkansas this weekend. First pitch with the Ichabods at Cypert Athletic Complex is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
