Keep The Bus Running

SNU Men's Basketball moves to 5-1 on the road with a 57-50 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva.

ALVA, Okla. – Southern Nazarene picked up their sixth straight victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon as they completed the road sweep in 57-50 fashion inside Percefull Fieldhouse.

It has been a very interesting season thus far for the Crimson Storm (6-5, 6-5 GAC) as they survived for their 5th road win of the season, the most games won away from home across the entire Great American Conference. Saturday afternoon was a defensive slugfest with the Rangers (2-6, 0-6 GAC) as neither team shot above 36 percent from the field for the entire game. SNU held Northwestern to a 35.4 percent clip while the Rangers held the Storm to 33.3 percent including 6-of-20 (30%) from behind the 3-point line.

Northwestern won the rebounding battle 37-30, but the Crimson Storm's stifling defense forced 21 Ranger turnovers which made the difference. SNU also went to the free-throw line 26 times, as they converted 21 compared to NWOSU who finished 11-for-15 from the charity stripe.

In the low scoring affair, junior guard Adokiye Iyaye led the way with a game-high 19 points on 4-of-12 shooting and a 3-for-9 clip from downtown. He also added three rebounds and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Manny Dixon and Karlyn Kenner were both excellent complimentary pieces Saturday as Dixon finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists while Kenner also tallied 11 points to go along with a couple of free-throws and three triples. Nick Davis and Xavier Bryant both came off the Storm bench to add five points as Davis hauled in six rebounds while Bryant swiped away three steals. Mo Wilson II added four points, four rebounds, two assists, and two blocks for SNU as well.

Both teams couldn't get much going in the first half as there were a combined 15 field goals made from both Southern Nazarene and Northwestern. SNU shot just 28 percent in the opening frame while the Rangers came in with a 32 percent clip. After a back and forth affair, the Crimson Storm were able to take a 23-19 lead into the halftime break.

SNU came out firing in the second half as they started on a 12-0 run to extend their lead to 35-19. Head coach Adam Bohac and company kept their foot on the gas as a Kenner 3-pointer with 13:50 to play ballooned the Storm lead to 43-21, their largest of the game. The Rangers weren't going down without a fight however, as they responded with a monster run of their own. They ripped off an 18-2 run over the next six minutes to cut the SNU lead to 45-39 with 6:34 remaining. After the Crimson Storm got back in rhythm, they pushed their lead back to eight with 3:37 to play and again with a minute to go which helped propel them to their fifth road victory of the season.

Southern Nazarene will face a tough test on Monday night as they welcome in rival Oklahoma Baptist, winners of their last seven games. Tip-off from the Sawyer Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
