Dawgs Ice Storm

A 33-point third quarter lifts SWOSU 71-60 over SNU on Thursday night in Weatherford.

WEATHERFORD, OK – The Southern Nazarene Women's basketball team made their way over to Weatherford riding a seven-game winning streak with the hope of producing the same outcome from when they last meet SWOSU. Unfortunately, the Storm's hot streak would end as the Western Division-leading Bulldogs stonewalled SNU in a 71-60 win on Thursday night inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.

The Crimson Storm (9-6, 9-6 GAC) have hit their stride this season as they came in tonight boasting an 8-2 record in their last ten matchups. This momentum carried into this contest as SNU posted 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field in the first quarter. Southern Nazarene held the offensively packed Bulldogs (15-2, 15-2 GAC) to just 14 points and 28.6% field goal percentage in the quarter.

SNU's charge would come to a halt as they struggled shooting in the second on their way to a six-point quarter. Meanwhile, SWOSU compiled 14 points, resulting in a 29-28 Storm lead to end the half. The Bulldogs would continue their success out of the break as they knocked down seven triples and put up 33 points in the third.

Southern Nazarene would try and battle their way back as a fourth quarter spent at the free-throw line aided them towards a 21-point quarter. This effort was not enough as Southwestern closed the door on a comeback despite a 10-point quarter on 3-of-17 shooting.

Freshman Payton Jones headed the Storm with 20 points, eight rebounds, and an assist. Jones was efficient from the charity stripe as she hit on seven of her 11 attempts. Cassandra Awatt chipped in with 13 points and shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Awatt would also post two assists and two steals.

Alexus Jones finished with seven points, five boards, and two steals. Abby Niehues got after it under the basket on her way to 11 rebounds and two blocks. Niehues would collect six points on 3-of-5 shooting as well. Other notables were Nefer Leon and Emily Monaghan who registered four points apiece. Monaghan also came down with five rebounds while Leon finished with three.

Southern Nazarene will make a quick turnaround as they return to Bethany to play host to Southeastern Oklahoma State (9-7, 9-7 GAC) on Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
