SNU Falls in Quarterfinals to No. 1 Seeded Bison

SNU Volleyball season ends in GAC Quarterfinals after sweep at the hands of Oklahoma Baptist

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.—The Southern Nazarene University volleyball team took to Hot Springs to compete in the GAC Championships, but fell in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-14) to the number one overall seed, Oklahoma Baptist.

It was always going to be a tall task for the Crimson Storm (11-16, 5-11 GAC), who scraped into the tournament as the number eight seed. They showed some fight early on, but Oklahoma Baptist (22-3, 14-2 GAC) proved their national ranking by countering anything and everything that the Storm threw their way.

The first set saw Southern Nazarene stick within striking distance for the first half of the set, but Oklahoma Baptist finally created some separation with a 4-0 run that put them in front 16-11. From there, the Bison refused to allow SNU any momentum, continually regaining serve immediately following any SNU point.

Set two was all Oklahoma Baptist early, but the Crimson Storm refused to allow it to be easy for the Bison. Following a 19-10 deficit, SNU rattled off five straight points to cut that deficit to just four points. The Bison would regain their composure, though, fending off the Storm for a 25-19 set two win.

The final set saw Oklahoma Baptist jump out to a 12-7 lead, but SNU quickly crawled back into it with a 4-0 run tha cut their deficit to just one point. That would be as close as the Storm got, though, as OBU ran away with the set from there. The Bison scored 13 of the final 16 points of the match on their way to the sweep.

Senior Grace Miracle led the way for SNU in her final game with the Storm. She tallied 9 kills to go along with her 6 digs.

Four different Storm members notched 4 kills a piece in Bailey Grimes, Sunny Batschelett, Shantalle Demirjian, and Whitney Bowie.

The loss brings an end to Southern Nazarene's season. Despite the loss, the Crimson Storm can be proud of their efforts this season to qualify for the GAC tournament. SNU found themselves at the bottom of the standings midway through the season, but the team responded by winning 5 of 7 GAC matches to earn a trip to Hot Springs. A very young team will look to build upon the late season surge and make even more noise next season.
