A Good Fight

Deaton’s three goals not enough as Storm fall short to ECU 8-3

BETHANY, Okla. — It was not the outcome the Southern Nazarene Women's Soccer team wanted today as their second half effort was not enough to bridge the 8-3 gap against East Central Saturday afternoon.

SNU (1-16, 0-10 GAC) posed a great offensive effort that match as they tallied a total of 20 shots with more than half of those on goal (11). However, ECU (3-10-1, 2-7-1 GAC) had the advantage with their 34 total shots and 20 on target shots against the Storm.

It was one of the quickest starts the Storm have faced all year as the Tigers managed to score just 45 seconds into the match. This set the tone for the remainder of that half as ECU punched in four more going into halftime as the score board read 5-0 in favor of the Tigers.

ECU had trouble maintaining their offensive dominance going into the second period and SNU decided they would capitalize off of this drop-off.

After the Tigers scored another just before the 60th minute, Kaitlyn Deaton caught fire and went on to score three goals for the Storm within an 11 minute period. After Deaton's surge, the Storm were behind just three (6-3) with 15 minutes left to play.

ECU picked up where they left off on the first and scored two more before the final buzzer sounded leaving Bethany with the 8-3 victory.

Deaton had an outstanding match with her eight shots, five shots on target, and three goals that afternoon which is a career-high for the Storm sophomore. Eden Holetzky and Delaney Stewart each picked up an assist that match as they both found Deaton  an openeing for two of her three goals. Kierra Wright also tried to get something started for SNU's offensive as both of her two shots were in range that match. Nikki Lohr, Natalie James, Delaney Stewart, and Isabella Kingsakongthong each had one shot on goal.

In goal, Eliya Alvidrez added to the defensive effort with her 12 saves that match.

The Storm are not done yet as they suit up again next Thursday on their trip to Alva where they face Northwestern Oklahoma State at 4 p.m.
