TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Southern Nazarene University Men's Soccer team snapped Northeastern States' three-game conference win streak Sunday afternoon after a late goal by the Storm (6-3. 3-0 GAC) earned them the 2-1 victory against the Riverhawks (5-5, 3-1 GAC).
With a scoreless first period and the Riverhawks taking the 1-0 lead after the half, the Storm picked up the pace and managed to pull off two second half goals to defeat NSU.
Efforts on both ends were almost identical between the Storm and Riverhawks with SNU only outshooting NSU by one (11-10) with eight of their shots on goal to NSU's seven. In goal, each team notched six saves on the afternoon making this a close match all around.
The Riverhawks secured the 1-0 lead just past the 51st minute, but SNU was quick to answer a minute after with their first goal of the match bringing the score to a 1-1 standoff.
The score would remain as time continued to tick, but SNU's Nathaniel Mederos broke the tie barrier with a late goal just past the 87th minute giving SNU the 2-1 lead with two minutes remaining.
The Storm stood their ground and secured their third conference win of the season bringing home another victory back to Bethany.
Recent Great American Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week Daniel Trojman tallied two shots and one goal that afternoon while teammate Nathaniel Mederos notched two shots, two shots on goal, and one goal that match.
In goal, Ramiro Jimenez secured five saves against the Riverhawks.
Other standouts that afternoon were Angel Lopez, who tallied three shots and two shots on goal, Juan Rodarte, with two shots and one on goal, Guy Esquivel, with one shot and one shot on goal, and Federico Anzoletti, who had one shot and one shot on goal as well.
The Storm will continue GAC play where they match up with Newman at home with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
