Triple Trouble

SNU buries 13 three-pointers en route to 73-63 win in Alva

ALVA, Okla. – The Percefull Fieldhouse is a dangerous place to play for Southern Nazarene, as they entered Thursday night having lost four of their last five games in Alva. But tonight, the demons were put to rest as SNU outlasted Northwestern Oklahoma State 73-63.

The Crimson Storm (17-6, 11-4 GAC) have now won two straight games inside that building as they buried 13 three-pointers on a red-hot 52 percent clip from behind the line. The 13 triples on Thursday night now makes it 13 games this season for the Storm knocking down 10+ from behind the arc. They scored 41 points in the second half and outscored the Rangers (7-14, 4-11 GAC) by 11 in the final 20 minutes to secure their third straight victory.

Despite being out-rebounded 30-28 in the contest, SNU dished out two more assists than NWOSU and forced the Rangers into 11 turnovers. The Storm converted those giveaways into 12 points going the other direction and they also went to the free-throw line 20 times, knocking down 14 of those tries.

Senior guard Jhonathan Dunn was sensational once again for the Crimson Storm as he led the way with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-16 shooting while burying 5-of-9 tries from downtown. He also added six rebounds and three assists as well. Dunn scored 18 of his 28 in the second half as he helped propel SNU to a pivotal 15-point second-half lead that proved too much for the Rangers. Micah Speight tied his season-high in rebounds with nine as he added 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the 3-point line.

Manny Dixon reached double-figures in scoring for the first time since November as he came off the Storm bench to score 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Tyler Williams added nine points and three rebounds while Maik Bouwer provided seven points and three rebounds as well.

Northwestern came out firing on their home court as they shot 52 percent in the first half. They out-rebounded the Storm 16-8 in the opening 20 minutes as both teams traded eight leads in the first half. A Dunn triple tied the game at 19-19 with 8:17 left before a Dixon free throw later gave SNU a 30-28 advantage with 3:54 remaining in the half. The Rangers would then hold the Storm to just two points in the final 3:30 as NWOSU took a 33-32 lead into the halftime break.

Speight came out in the second half on a mission, as he scored 10 of his 16 points in the final 20 minutes. He buried three triples in the half as his third one ballooned the SNU lead to 59-47 with 9:46 to play. The Storm would later increase that lead to 15 before the Rangers cut it to eight with 2:05 to play. SNU knocked down a few free throws down the stretch as Dunn's dagger with 1:41 sealed the victory for head coach Adam Bohac and company.

Southern Nazarene will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Durant for a pivotal matchup against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
