BETHANY – Southern Nazarene finished out the regular season in style with a 64-49 win over Arkansas Monticello on Saturday afternoon.. After a rough stretch of games, SNU is starting to put all the pieces together just in time to make a run in the GAC Conference Championships next weekend.
On Senior Night, the Crimson Storm (17-9, 14-8 GAC) came back to play on Bobby Martin Court against the Blossoms (18-10, 13-9 GAC) for the final time this season. SNU showed their defensive greatness, only allowing Arkansas Monticello to shoot 32.7% in the contest. The defense also limited the Blossoms to 22.1% from the arc, and also forced 19 turnovers. The Crimson Storm bench was another huge reason for the big win with 39 points.
Jaycee Soap finished out the season in a fantastic fashion leading the Storm with 14 points, five steals, and four assists. Senior
Myriam Garcia had a great last game at the Sawyer Center with 12 points, two blocks, and seven rebounds.
Alexus Jones also had a terrific performance with 10 points, two assists, three rebounds.
Massey Beard had perhaps her best game of the season as she scored a season-high nine points.
In the first quarter, SNU started out flat as they didn't score for the first five minutes of the game. However, the Crimson Storm limited the Blossoms to 8 points on 4-of-13 shooting. The game was tied 8-8 to end the 1st quarter of play.
In the second quarter,
Myriam Garcia got a bucket in the first 30 seconds to give the Storm its first lead of the game. SNU didn't allow Monticello to make a single point in the second until 5 minutes had passed. The Crimson Storm put together a much better offensive production with 18 points in the quarter. SNU led 26-24 going into halftime.
SNU had a tremendous 3rd quarter defensively as they only allowed 5 points on 2-of-16 from the field. The defense also didn't allow the Blossoms to score for the last six minutes of the quarter. To end the quarter, the Storm went on a 10-0 run, to take a commanding 43-29 lead.
The Crimson Storm had their best offensive quarter in the 4th as they scored 21 points. SNU walked off the court victorious winning 64-49.
SNU will have to wait and see who they'll play in the first round of the GAC Conference Championships. The Tournament for the crown of the best team in the GAC will start on March 5th and end on March 8th.
