Ending On a High Note

SNU Softball goes 2-0 on Sunday to close Cactus Classic on a positive note

TUCSON, Ariz. –  Southern Nazarene wrapped up the 2020 Cactus Classic on a positive note as they picked up two victories on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over West Texas A&M and a dominant 7-1 win over Eastern New Mexico. SNU finished the tournament in Tucson with a 3-3 record and now have seven victories under their belts heading into Great American Conference play next weekend.

Brooklyn Sparkman got the nod in the first game of the day as the senior secured her third win of the season to move her record to 3-0 on the season in eight apperances. She tossed her third complete game of the season as she struck out three Buff batters and allowed just one run in four hits.

It was a great defensive effort from both sides as the two teams combined for just three total runs and 10 total hits. For SNU, Peyton Robinson and Mahina Sauer led the way as the duo each finished with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish. Caitlyn Curlee went 1-for-3 with an RBI while Hailie Fellers also finished 1-for-3 with a run scored. Natalie Jones recorded the Crimson Storm's only other RBI in the game as well.

Curlee broke the game open in the top of the first as her single up the middle scored Sauer to give SNU the early 1-0 lead. Later in the second, Jones' sacrifice fly to center field scored Fellers to push the Storm advantage to 2-0. The Buffs weren't going down quietly however, as they pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the SNU lead to make it 2-1.

Southern Nazarene's defense flexed its muscles in the final three innings as Sparkman was excellent in the circle to not allow West Texas A&M anything. The Crimson Storm hung on to take the victory and snap their two-game losing skid.

Four runs in the first inning of the nightcap game led Southern Nazarene past Eastern New Mexico on Sunday. Caitlyn Curlee, Kai Sanchez, and Natalie Jones all contributed in the big inning with RBIs to kick things off with the Greyhounds.

The Crimson Storm got on the board in the first inning when Curlee's double drove in two. This was only the beginning as SNU tallied 10 hits in the game. Mahina Sauer and Peyton Robinson each racked up multiple hits in the game as well. Sauer went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the charge. The SNU defense didn't commit a single error in the field.

Chelsea Vandiver got the start in the circle for SNU as she earned her second victory of the season. She struck out two in 2.1 innings of work while Courtney Cox and Cassidy Davila came on in relief for the Storm as well. After scoring four runs in the opening inning, Sauer singled to center field to score Robinson to balloon the SNU lead to 5-0. The Greyhounds finally got on the board in the top of the third to cut it to 5-1, but Southern Nazarene came right back with Victoria Rodriguez's sacrifice fly to score Hailie Fellers to make it 6-1.

Later in the same inning, Kai Sanchez scored on an error to make it 7-1 and SNU was able to cruise in the final four innings of action.

Southern Nazarene will open GAC play next weekend on the road as they travel to East Central to battle the Tigers in a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for next Friday at 1:00 p.m.
