Stampeding the Bison

SNU makes it a complete season sweep of OBU as they run through their rival 76-61.

SHAWNEE, Okla. - The hype was all around Oklahoma Baptist's "White-Out" night as the Storm marched their way into the Noble Complex on a mission to sweep the regular season series against the Bison. They did just that.

Southern Nazarene (15-6, 12-5 GAC) didn't let the pressure of playing in the house of their rival affect them and they stampeded their way to a 76-61 win over Oklahoma Baptist (5-18, 1-16 GAC) on Thursday evening.

SNU planned to redeem themselves from their nail-biting loss to Southeastern last week as they again shot over 50% from the floor. In fact, the Storm shot 53.6 percent while they held the Bison to a mere 36.5 percent on 19-of-52 shots. Southern Nazarene would also control the boards as they brought down a total of 38 rebounds, 28 of those being defensive, and only allowed Oklahoma Baptist to grab a total of 26.

The Crimson Storm hit on all facets of the game, forcing 19 turnovers, poking away 11 balls, and denying a total of 19 shots. However, the most impressive stat may have be the dominance in the paint as 50 of SNU's 76 points came from down-below while OBU only managed 20 points in the paint.

Three different SNU players posted season-highs and career-highs as they had no intentions of letting off the gas at any point. Among those was junior Alexus Jones, who went off for a season-high 23 points. Jones also brought down eight rebounds and a career-high six steals. Myriam Garcia followed close behind with some exceptional play from down low. Garcia collected 14 points and posted a couple of career-highs with 11 rebounds and six blocks.

Nefer Leon was a huge spark off the bench as she chalked up a career-high 10 points and two steals. Jaycee Soap had a rather quiet evening as she mostly helped her teammates to the basket, accounting for six assists and one block. Kennedy Gillette scored six points, bring down six rebounds, and claw her way to a couple steals.

The Storm never trailed in the matchup as much of their points came in the first quarter. SNU scored 26 points in the first to start things off, shooting a sizzling 64.7 percent from the field. The charge would then come to a bit of a halt as the Bison were able to outscore the Crimson Storm 14-13. However, coming out of the break, SNU woke up and scored 37 points to finish off OBU 76-61.

Southern Nazarene will be back in action on Saturday, at home, as they take on Southwestern Oklahoma State (11-11, 7-9 GAC). Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
