ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Southern Nazarene drops their second Great American Conference matchup of the season 71-59, after winning two straight, at the hands of the Henderson State Reddies in Arkadelphia Saturday.
SNU (7-3, 4-2 GAC) got off to a rocky start as they managed to score only eight points in the first quarter, their lowest of the season, while HSU (9-3, 4-2 GAC) scored 15. This ends the Storm's six-game streak of leading after the first quarter of play. During this run, Southern Nazarene put together a 5-2 record.
Henderson State posted a 50% FG percentage on 27-of-54 shooting while Southern Nazarene struggled from the floor as they ended the day at 39.6%. SNU held their own at the free-throw line as they knocked down 11-of-15 attempts (73%) as HSU finished at 60%. It was a near even matchup on the boards as the Reddies edged the Storm 28-25.
After the first quarter score of 15-8, SNU lit a fire under their bellies as they woke up to outscore HSU 17-15 to trail by four going into halftime.
Junior
Alexus Jones led the Storm statistically as she turned in a 15 point and eight rebound performance on 5-of-11 shooting. However, Jones struggled to keep the ball in her possession as she allowed seven turnovers of her own.
Sonia Sarda followed close behind with 14 points to accompany her five assists. The only other Storm player in double digits was
Jaycee Soap as she collected a hard fought 12 points on 3-of-12 shooting. Soap also brought down four rebounds.
Abby Niehues and
Kennedy Gillette scored nine and seven points, respectively. Gillette brought down a team-high five rebounds as well.
The Reddies would go on to outscore the Storm in the next two quarters as they ended the game of a significant run.
Southern Nazarene will return home to begin a four-game home stretch as they face-off against Arkansas Tech University (7-3, 4-2 GAC) on January 9th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
